[Mark Dobson] “clip appearances in the timeline”

Bottom right of timeline. Click on the “light switch” next to the zoom slider and see the timeline display options. Yes please do read the manual and/or get any of the video tutorials. FCPX is actually not the kind of app one can stumble through and really learn. Much beyond the very basics is not intuitive at all.

Sorry Craig my question was not complete.

What I am asking is where the keyboard shortcut for toggling between the clip appearances.

In all the video tutorials I’ve bought and studied and and from reading through the manual I just can’t seem to find it.

Maybe with your experience you know?

I’ve looked high and low for this as well. Especially since some tasks are performed better in different track modes.

I’ve found my self using the mouse and clicking the switch way too often!!

Shift+T made it so simple in FCP 7, alas not here.

    Cheers,

    Brendan

    Thanks Brendan

yeah it’s a pain to have to mouse down, click open and then manually select the different view. In FCP 7 I’m constantly using Shift T.

What is strange is that there is a keyboard shortcut for changing between the appearance of the clips in the event browser. (well thats just between list and clip view)

So I guess I’ll provide another feedback request to Apple.

No keyboard shortcut for clip appearances in the timeline. There’s doesn’t seem like a means to create one in the keyboard command editor either.

It’s another example of the very incomplete state FCPX is in. Lots of unrealized potential though but hard for us end users to bring it there.

It’s a bit of a hack, scrub that…it’s a complete hack!…. but I might run a test using the app “keyboard maestro” to see if that works by recording the action of clicking on the track heights parameters and assigning it a hot key to trigger it.

But you’d expect that functionality to already be there! Like what has been mentioned already, it’s loads of these “little things” that are lacking which add up to be quite a pain as well

disclaimer : I’m not associated with keyboard maestro at all, it’s just been a handy tool of choice for me.

    cheers,

    Brendan

Was able test switching FCP X track displays using a keyboard shortcut to trigger a Keyboard Maestro macro.

It seems to work pretty good.

Here’s a link to a video showing test

    Hey Brendan,

sorry missed that post – is Keyboard Maestro difficult to programme?

Would it be possible to use it to launch a transition that is not in the command editor

( the new audio only transition by Alex Gollner )

In theory yes, it should do that fine, as you can tell it just to record mouse movements, then replay that action with your own chosen hot key.

Though I found you have to play round with it a bit, as sometimes it triggers the actions to quickly and doesn’t work.

    Cheers,

    Brendan

Even though it works, it’s no replacement for functionality that should be there in the first place.

But should do the job until we have that.

    cheers,

    Brendan
