If you’re referring to an MPEG2 Transport Stream then Compressor will do it for you.

They’re not using HDV. The HVX200 uses DVCPROHD. Also, it only records DV on tape. DVCPRO50 and DVCPROHD are recoreded on P2 cards or a hard drive via FS-100 or similar device so you couldn’t record back to tape on the camera.

400 and 800 are on the same bus. If you’re going to use firewire drives, you should use a card.

Pro Tools is the way to go for high-end multitrack stuff. Soundtrack Pro has been fine for nearly all of my audio-for-video needs.

I’ve got two of them and they work just fine. I use one as a mixer in a robotic multi-camera production system and the other as a splitter/DA in an edit/dubbing/transcoding suite. (I also look forward to the free drink.)

I use TAPCO S5s in two of my edit suites. They’re $350 a pair at Sam Ash. I’ve also got the S8s in one of my suites. They sound great but they take up more space and they’re $500 a pair.

I’m sure there are FW800 solutions out there, but if you’ve got an available PCI slot you should consider SATA.

I’m a big fan of the MacGurus “roll your own” SATA solutions. I built two 250GBX4 arrays and they’ve been great. If you’ve got a new PCI Express machine, I’m not sure if MacGurus has a card for you. There are PCI Express SATA controllers out there, however. Here’s one:

You could get the internal to external port adapter from MacGurus for a pretty slick setup.
