Got an AJA io box which I have been using to capture component DVC Pro to the DV codec for use in Final Cut; capturing media to local hard drive. However now editing documenatry for TV so need to capture uncompressed 8 or 10 bit to some storage. Thinking of going with G-tech. What Gtech storage system should we go for, is it the SATA obviously because the Fire Wire will be used by the AJA?

    Cheers

In my opinion, you will be much better off with a SATA solution – G Tech, Firmtek, ProMax – so many great solutions. But plenty of people use Firewire 800 drives very successfully, so Firewire 800 from G-Tech or others will work as well. You are pushing 10 bit with FW800, but 8 bit uncompressed will work just fine. Again, SATA is a superior solution, and very stable.

Ditto what Bob said. SATA is the better choice for you and right now G-Tech is my current favorite for smaller inexpensive solutions. https://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-SATA.cfm

I highly recomend SATA too – check out https://www.macgurus.com/productpages/sata/satakits.php

If it’s in your budget go for the – Burly 4 Bay SATA Kit 1.6TB and the Firmtek Seritek/1VE4 External 4 Port SATA Host Card.

I’m a big fan of the MacGurus “roll your own” SATA solutions. I built two 250GBX4 arrays and they’ve been great. If you’ve got a new PCI Express machine, I’m not sure if MacGurus has a card for you. There are PCI Express SATA controllers out there, however. Here’s one:

You could get the internal to external port adapter from MacGurus for a pretty slick setup.
