You said you had the BetaCam OUTPUTS sent to your ADVC-100.

Do you have the BetaCam INPUTS connected?

There would need to be a video cable (BNC or S-Video) and 2 audio cables (XLR on the Beta deck.)

I assume you have the RS-422 CONTROL cable from the Mac to the deck if you tried a capture.

If you got nothing but BUZZ in the audio, you have some audio connector problems, but those cables (BetaCam output) won’t affect your ability to output back to Beta tape.

It takes a LOT of cables (and, sometimes, adapters) to connect these devices.

Simple answer is to not use “Edit to Tape” or “Print to video”.

Just connect the gear, make sure you can see and hear FCP on the camcorder or deck, hit “record” manually and play the timeline.

I’ve never used “print” or “edit” in the years and many hundreds of edits I’ve made with FCP.

If you have a mic/trasmitter and a portable receiver to match it, that’s the whole “system”.

I’ve regularly captured, controlled the deck, and output back to tape with a 72 foot FW cable.
(Tape room down the hall from edit bays.)

So you should be fine.
But only YOU can tell US if you do have a problem with your PARTICULAR FW cable… (some may be “better” than others.)

Wow, in all the years I’ve been here on the COW, this is the first “disparaging word” I’ve ever heard mentioned about a DSR11.
Most posts talk about its amazing ruggedness and reliability, especially considering its lower price.

As to FW “hot-patching”… I do it all the time with the Mac, and all the decks and camcorders I use… never had a problem of any kind.

Of course, another good choice would be DV tape.

Is that the format you shoot and edit with?

If so, your quailty will be very high if you can send the station (and they can PLAY) a DV tape.

When I delever a 30 sec. spot in this way (FTP), it takes my computer an HOUR on-line via DSL.

(And that doesn’t count the time it takes to FIRST COMPRESS it to a tranferable file.)

If 30 sec. transfer = 1 hour

then 30 min. transfer = 60 hours (well, probably not, but a HECK of a long time).

How about burning a DVD? It will look good, but its much more compressed than BetaCam.

If you want the best quality and a 1-to-1 dub-time, of these, BetaCam is still the choice.

I allow PEAKS to go to -6 on the FCP meters.

But I dislike mixing with peak-reading meters.

I send my output into a deck with “VU” meters so I can see my “average” level… a better indication of how “loud” the mix is.
