Just got one for a video production class. I will be plugging this unit into several different computers, importing and exporting video for 4 different teams in each of 6 classes. I will be using a 30-foot firewire cable. . Ideally each computer would have a dsr 11 permanently plugged into it with a video monitor and speakers. But we just can

I have unplugged and plugged a couple of dsr11’s for years without any problems whatsoever. The DSR11 is not a very good player, it has problems with the mechanics, and it wears down quite fast, but nonetheless, I’ve had no firewire related problems.

The dsr45 is a MUCH better player, but costs quite alot more.

Wow, in all the years I’ve been here on the COW, this is the first “disparaging word” I’ve ever heard mentioned about a DSR11.
Most posts talk about its amazing ruggedness and reliability, especially considering its lower price.

As to FW “hot-patching”… I do it all the time with the Mac, and all the decks and camcorders I use… never had a problem of any kind.

I’ll second Matte. My DSR-11 is a workhorse. True the “feed” mechanism can be a bit “sensitive” when using mini tapes but if you make sure you’ve put the time in properly and don’t the thing you shouldn’t have a problem. I never have.

I pulled the firewire cable too without issue. I have heard stories of firewire ports getting “fried” while doing this so there may be some risk in this. I haven’t had a problem there too but I’m only pulling the cable once in a great while.

Thanks, I thought as much on the firewire hotplug issue. What about the 30 foot cable? Is there a size limit?

I’ve regularly captured, controlled the deck, and output back to tape with a 72 foot FW cable.
(Tape room down the hall from edit bays.)

    So you should be fine.
But only YOU can tell US if you do have a problem with your PARTICULAR FW cable… (some may be “better” than others.)

Ditto. Mine rocks. Workhorse. Never heard anything bad about them. I unplug at will. That’s the idea of firewire, no? Maybe it just meant shut down the deck? You should definitely quit FCP and shut down the deck otherwise FCP will get confused or unstable.

Obviously, you guys have never read my posts. 😉

NEVER been a fan of the DSR-11. Shuttling is slow. Getting tape on and off the heads is slow. No must have features such as TC preset or even a TC LED readout.

The DSR-45 is a better deck by FAR. IMHO, the DSR-11 is for those that can’t afford a deck with more pro features. If the DSR-45 was closer in price, most people would definitely prefer it.

Back in the Beta SP days would you rather have a UVW deck or a PVW deck? You see my point?

It’s funny how guys’ egos are tied in with their gear purchases. And I’m just as bad as the lot of ya! 😉

All you need to worry about. NOT true about FireWire drives though. You should always unmount before shutting down or unplugging.
