    Hi

I’m trying to mix a show for broadcast, but the facility do not have any external meters set up, so I’m relying on software meters in FCP.
I’m used to working to -18db, but the FCP literature quotes -12db as the level to work to. I have done a mix to -18db and the show has been burnt to DVD for viewings, but the volume of the DVD seems a bit low when played on a normal TV (it’s all there but the TV has to be turned up more than normal).

    Does anyone have any advice?

    Cheers

I allow PEAKS to go to -6 on the FCP meters.

But I dislike mixing with peak-reading meters.

I send my output into a deck with “VU” meters so I can see my “average” level… a better indication of how “loud” the mix is.

    Hi,

I’ve been working on a number of different shows that went out for broadcast and have experienced the same issue…went through the show and mixed everything down for a fairly good average peak of -12 but when I compressed for dvd the audio was quite low (where if you played the dvd, turned the volume up to hear it and then turned on the tv for cable the volume would be blasting…).

I use an external deck and usually mix everything to -12 in fcp and then adjust the audio in on the deck to get my levels really nice but i can’t do that for a dvd…

    interesting…

It’s your A-Pac setting, NOT your FCP setting.
For DVD, change your normalization in A-Pac to -31db (and lock with return)
to retain what you have in FCP.

    Cheers

    Hey thanks for responding…

My A-Pac setting? I’m using Compressor 2 and A-Pac doesn’t exist anymore…it dissappeared when I upgraded…does the setting still apply for the Dolby 2.0 setting? I think it defults around -27dbfs when creating the ac3 file. Thanks for your info…i’ll have to play around with it…

    thanks,
    nate
