If you create a new video track ABOVE your video, drop the “Slug” onto that track, then add your “matte” effect to the Slug (and “razor blade” it to the length of each clip below) you can adjust the opacity (therefor its “darkness”) of the upper track effect over each individual video clip.

Effects > Video Filters > Matte > Mask Shape > Oval (make it the right size)
add the “Mask Feather” filter and adjust to taste.

Not “polarizers” but graduated “neutral density” (or “color density”) lens filters.
These are some examples. Google for more.
As for in POST, you can create a soft-edge “half-screen” black or color and mix it with your raw footage on the timeline.
Of course, if the sky was severly over-exposed on the SHOOT, you might not be able to “improve” it too much.These kind of exposure tricks are best done during the shoot.

Sampling an “echo” for reduction will not work.
That kind of “sampling and removal” is for continuous noise like a constant hum or hiss.The echo/reverb is an analog of the audio that you DO want… constantly changing as the talent speaks.

In FCP Log & Capture change the device control preset to “Non-Contollable Device”, then just hit “Capture Now” when you’re ready.(You might also want to change the “Limit Capture Now” so that it won’t automatically stop after x number of minutes.)
Be sure to TEST this, as some systems are not too reliable under these conditions.
ALTERNATIVE:
Borrow or buy another inexpensive camcorder, connect via FW and record on the TAPE in the 2nd camcorder. -
Also, you must only judge QUALITY on an external video monitor (never the computer monitor), and only after rendering at the highest quality setting.

You should generally avoid using the native FCP title generators.
Instead, use “Title 3D” that is one of the other choices in your Generators menu.

No, “insufficient content” does not mean FCP thinks you have “lousy footage”.
…That’s up to your CLIENTS 😉It means there’s not enough frames to fill the space, staring at the chosen in-point to the end of the clip.
Replace is a “unique” function.
It takes its in-points (MATCH-points) from where you last placed the cursors on the clip and the timeline.
