replace inconsistent?
Posted by Bob Flood on April 21, 2006 at 8:30 pmhey a quick one
why when i drag aclip i know is long enough to replace a shot to the replace button on the canvas i get the error message “insufficient content for edit”
adn waht does that really mean? does the systme think the quality of the performance is not good enough, thereby rendering a decree of insufficient content?
anyway maybe soemone can tell me or point me to some answers on this replace thing

April 21, 2006 at 9:01 pmThe replace edit works by aligning the viewer playhead with the timeline playhead and replacing the frame in the timeline with the frame under the playhead in the viewer. So if in the timeline you’re at the start of the shot and in the viewer you’re near the end of the shot you’ll be the insufficient content error even though the shot in the viewer itself is more than long enough to cover the shot in the timeline. This may be what’s happening to you. It doesn’t have anything to do with performance or the quality of the media.
All the best,

No, “insufficient content” does not mean FCP thinks you have “lousy footage”.
…That’s up to your CLIENTS 😉It means there’s not enough frames to fill the space, staring at the chosen in-point to the end of the clip.
Replace is a “unique” function.
It takes its in-points (MATCH-points) from where you last placed the cursors on the clip and the timeline. -

April 21, 2006 at 9:42 pmthanx to both of you!!!
i’ll look through the manual to delve further, but it has nothing to do with marks or selection? only where the cusror ie cti is parked?

April 21, 2006 at 10:23 pmThat and the track that’s set as the destination track. Those are the only factors.

April 22, 2006 at 10:22 amin and out points in the viewer have NO effect.
in and out points on the timeline DO.in fact they will take precedence over clip boundaries.
in some instances you can replace “nothing” if you have a blank area defined with in and out points.
sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t.cheers,

April 23, 2006 at 6:05 pmThe playhead on the timeline doesn’t need to be within the In-Out boundaries for Replace to work. FCP will count down (or up) from the playhead to the marks.
