You say the “tapes” but only mention a single tape that was lost.

Was the missing tape actually delivered with the rest?
Was it played and checked in your location?

Who witnessed it being in your location?

If it was, in fact, AT your location, have you looked:

A, In tape boxes of other cassettes that may have been open in the same room at the same time?
B. Call clients who received dubs on the same format tapes as the master?
C. In the sofa cushions in the room?
D. In the restroom?
E. In the coffee area?
F. In the car of the employee
G. In the “other pants, back home” of the employee

There are no limits as to exactly what someone can “claim” in a legal proceeding,
so its useless to speculate what “might” happen, IF it happens.

Wow… this is one of those nightmares we all fear.

This is very simple.

You can’t do it.

DVD camcorders don’t record “DV files” and that’s what FCP is designed to capture over FW.

Dub the DVD to a miniDV tape via S-Video, then capture the DV tape.

OR use DVD-Ripper software to take the files from the DVD when its in the Mac’s DVD drive.

BTW, DVD camcorders use MUCH more compression when recording compared to DV camcorders.

You must monitor for quality only on a external VIDEO monitor, and not on the Canvas on the computer screen.

Does this “defect” appear on an external monitor?
If so, try trashing the FCP Preferences.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

No, you can’t see the complete video image, edge-to-edge, on standard TV sets.
That’s what the “safe area” guide-frames is all about.

You must keep everything that is “important” (especially Titles) well-within the “safe area” so that those images will be seen (and not cut off) on MOST standard TV’s.

I make DVD dubs all the time.

I just make a dub to DV tape first, then I dub from the DV tape to DVD recorder via FW.\

That way I can continue to edit on the Mac while I make multiple DVDs.

The quality via FW from the DV tape, is identical as it would be coming directly from FCP via FW.

I use a very low-cost stand-alone DVD recorder that I bought a couple of years ago at Costco and I have made hundreds of DVD’s with very few “rejects.”

Actually much better luck regarding “rejects” and compatibility with various players (and much, MUCH FASTER recording) than when I have burned DVD’s on the Mac’s Super Drive.

When my Mac does this I just “Repair Disk Permissions” with Disc Utility (Mac) and everything comes back.

If it persists,
you can also
Re-boot from your “OS X Installer CD” (hold down the “c” key while starting the Mac with the CD in the drive)
When the CD window first opens after the restart, select “Disk Utility” from the pull-down Menu.
Then run “Repair Disk” on the System Disk
and all should be well agian.

Most if not all DVD decks with FW connectors use that FW for camcorder input to the DVD deck only (and to control a connected DV camcorder).

The FW connection will not send out a signal from the DVD for recording onto another unit or to FCP.

For that matter, I don’t think you can even connect the DVD deck’s FW jack directly to the Mac and have it record directly FROM the FCP timeline.
