October 7, 2005 at 1:30 am in reply to: Sony DSR570WS firewire outputYes. Outputing the tape from the camcorder into FCP (FCP can control the playback) will work fine.
But, many high-end camcorders will NOT RECORD FROM the FCP timeline.
Not sure if this one will, but probably not. -

October 7, 2005 at 1:25 am in reply to: Transition FX holds the old render file and does not update[Brian] “The only way I was able to get it to update correctly, was to quit FCP and reopen the project.
Any suggestions?”
Yes, exactly what you did.
Another method (without the re-start) is to edit a section of the “slug” on same track right on the area that presents the “ghost” video.
Then, just delete that slug and add the transition back in again.
Render, and that should clean it up.Another thing to try:

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.Download these free Apple Scripts at

October 7, 2005 at 1:13 am in reply to: iMovie User stumped by FC[David Coffin] “how do you relink the snipped-up audio track to the snipped-in-different-places video track”
Put the cursor on the frame of the VIDEO in the timeline you want to sync the audio to.
Hit the “F” key.
The matching clip will pop into the Viewer (left) monitor at the exact frame you’re on in the timeline.
Edit only the sound to the now-matching video.iMovie is simply NOT designed for subtile, exacting editing.
If you have been able to use iMovie for your purposes, you must be pretty adept at your editing skills. What awaits you in FCP, if you will stick with it can be DAZZLING.
While iMovie is a cute little home-movie cutter,
FCP is a first-class fully professional editing system.
It can help you create anything you can imagine. -

Switch the Display characters “on” on the DECK so you can see the TC display on the deck’s monitor.
We have done this with machine room decks since long before FCP. -

October 4, 2005 at 10:54 pm in reply to: Recording around a tableOne approach would be a lav on each person.
No matter how they lean in or out, they would be on-mic.
Otherwise about any desk mic will work, one for each person. There are lots of good mixers, but under these conditions you want an audio OPERATOR to mix this live as you shoot.
Just having all four mics UP all the time (even split into two channels)
can be a big reverb, cross-leakage, and background noise mess.
A good operator can quickly run the gains on each mic (balanced levels) and take the folks not talking out of the mix (less cross-leakage).If you want a very versatile mixer for the best price you’ll ever find, look here:
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_id/54496
The Behringer MXB1002 can mix 5 microphones (!) and/or 4 STEREO line sources, and, if you need it on-location, can operate on three 9v batteries (including phantom power for the mics). It costs… $100. (I own one and its amazing for the money).
