render problem

I just upgraded to FCP 5 from 4. I have a timeline that is completely rendered. Everytime I try to export it as mpeg 2 I get a message that says the timeline needs to be rendered. At the same time the red bar appears over the timeline as if it does need rendering. When I click out of the export box and go back to the timeline, the red bar dissappears and the timeline behaves as if it is already rendered. If I hit render all, nothing happens.

Any thoughts.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.

Also, under Sequence>Render, check to make sure there’s a checkmark next to the red needs render option in the dropdown.

I usually have minimal render option checked in Render and all render options checked in Render All, although I’ve been known to change that up depending on the current project and needed workflow.

What if you’ve done what was suggested and still nothing? I had initially recieved a notice in my canvas window – the window was completely red, and it read something to the effect that I was out of memory and needed to free space up – but I don’t know how that can be because I’ve plenty of harddrive space, there’s nothing in my render manager. Now whenever I try to render – the render window pops up for a milisecond, barely noticable, and nothing is rendered. I’ve opened old, and created and new projects and it acts the same in each instance…Is this a FCP 5 issue, because I just upgraded it and my FCP never acted this way before?
