black shows as gray

Where are you viewing the output?

Many monitors have poor “DC restoration” (ability to hold a “pure” black level).

When you also have other video (titles or clips) on the screen at the same time (not just black-on-black) does the black appear to “jump” back down?

View FCP on the Waveform Monitor [Tools > Video Scopes] and check at the black-level there.

If “jump down” mean return to black, then no it stays with this white haze over it.

I looked at the vector scope and the bottom doesn’t rest on the line marked black. How do i get it there. And by the way my monitor is iiyama HM903DTA and it is pal.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).

Nope, it’s perfectly clean here as I just used it on Monday for a 1 minute project. I view all my work on a Sony PVM-20L5/1 broadcast monitor and it’s very very clean.

In fact, I’ve not seen this issue at all with that filter. Trash the prefs is probably a good start.
