iMovie User stumped by FC

Dear iMovie User stumped over FC,

I am not a technical genius and this is the first time I have tried to help someone else on this website but I have been using FCP for 3 years. Are you aware of the razor tool? You could take one video file and just chop it up where needed the under one of the headings at the top ( I am not at my FCP computer right now but you should be able to find it)There is a lift button. Do that instead of deleting, then under one of the headings there is an option to close gaps. The audio and the video should always be linked, no matter what cut you make, that appropriate audio file will still be linked to it.

If you want to just select a portion of audio you can mark in and outpoint and on the left hand side, you can lock the video files so that they are not altered. Then you can copy and paste.

Every professional editor does the things you’re doing, but we’ve all taken the time to learn editing technique and to learn the tools we use. As Elizabeth has pointed out, there are many more proficient ways to achieve the things you’ve described, but no one on an Internet forum could possibly tell you how to do all this. There is an entire series of tutorials that come with FCP that will teach you both technique and the software, I suggest you either take the time use them and to learn how do edit, or better yet, hire a professional.

Put the cursor on the frame of the VIDEO in the timeline you want to sync the audio to.
Hit the “F” key.
The matching clip will pop into the Viewer (left) monitor at the exact frame you’re on in the timeline.
Edit only the sound to the now-matching video.

iMovie is simply NOT designed for subtile, exacting editing.
If you have been able to use iMovie for your purposes, you must be pretty adept at your editing skills.

What awaits you in FCP, if you will stick with it can be DAZZLING.

While iMovie is a cute little home-movie cutter,
FCP is a first-class fully professional editing system.
It can help you create anything you can imagine.

If you enjoy using I-Movie and it works for you just stick to it. It’s not a bad program, I edited and entire music video on it. I would have rather’ve had FCP at the time because that is what I was trained to use. If you are going to get into more complex editing than you can take the time to take a class. But an edited video, is an edited video and it seems like it is taking more work for you at the moment to learn another program than to just use the one you have. I do suggest learning FCP it is better, but in good time.
