I would not recommend using a scan-convertor or an NTSC monitor from the SVGA device.
Converting SVGA to NTSC (especially with the fine details of a display) will never look “good”.

I would add an additional SVGA computer monitor (CRT or LCD) and mount it (or sit it) anywhere I could find.

A production house where I work has done this very thing in all the suites. Each room has its own SVGA LCD screen running from an SVGA DA from the VTM-200’s output.

The input feed to the VTM-200 is on the routing switcher.

1. Rent a DV camcorder.
2. Borrow a DV camcoder.
3. Buy a USED DV Camcorder.
4. Buy a NEW DV camcorder.

Hi8 is a vastly inferior format to DV.

There has been an autosave “issue” for years now.

One of the conditions that can start the problem is:
if you “Log and Capture” during an edit session, many times the autosave will not work (or not work properly) after you complete the “Log and Capture”.

The workarounds are:

1. CONSTANTLY, Constantly, constantly (get it?) MANUALLY hit save.

2. Quit FCP and Open it again. This usually starts the autosave working.

Even then, its simply good practice to do “1.” above throughout any edit session.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

Best bet at a workaround is to either capture directly from the camcorder, or connect the camcorder to the deck and make a new dub to the deck from the camcorder.

Rolling cleanly is primarily a function of the SPEED at which you roll the CG. The edges interact with the TV scan lines.
If you find the right speed (and there are several that work better) you can get the best results.

You should experiment with (very slightly) changing the length/speed of the roll.
Make a change, render part of it, then check it.
Make another change and see which is better.
Continue until the best (cleanest) speed is found.

In addition, you can reduce the sharpness of the CG a bit (add a very small amount of Gaussian Blur) and that will reduce the amount of visible moir

Are you viewing your PowerDVD playback on a COMPUTER screen?

Nearly all NTSC video plays with visible artifacts on a computer screen.

I don’t know if this is the TOTAL reason your MPEGs look bad, but it may be a major factor.
