I always record all voice-overs directly to TAPE.
The FCP “Voice-Over Tool” is handy if you are trying to NARRATE already-edited video while the timeline plays, but that’s not something I ever need.
The thought that the ONLY COPY of my voice-tracks are on the Mac hard-drive (no tape with timecode) does not appeal to me.
Connect your audio source to a camcorder or deck, record the tracks, then mark the best takes and capture.

As I was viewing a movie on my 7-foot projection screen, I thought I should add that “DV” is MUCH LESS COMPRESSED than “DVD”.
And DVD’s are probably the “most-projected” format in SD today.
Good DVDs look sensational when projected.But, as was said before, the fact that your project is DARK will be the biggest problem.
LCD/DLP projectors have limited contrast (compared to direct-view screens) and “too dark” is not easy for them to handle.

I project DV footage all the time.
SD is SD. And a clean DV can look VERY nice in an SD projection.
(Heck, we used to project VHS, and THAT is LOW-rez!)
OTOH, the kind of IMAGE you DESCRIBED will probably NOT look so good.
Attempting to project a “very dark” image with “low lighting” will not hold up well.
But you won’t KNOW until you try it.

Low-end Canon camcorders default to TOO MUCH “Sharpness”.
To better-match my Sony PD-150, I need to turn the “sharpness” all the way DOWN on my Canon GL1.
If you zoom in and set IRIS, when you pull back the image will likely be to HOT with MANY camcorders.
Especially with “basic” lenses, a fully-zoomed-in lens NEEDS more light for proper exposure than the same lens at a wider zoom setting.
Set the IRIS on “normal” framing (not too tight, not too wide) and, of course, set the FOCUS on the teh tight-shot.

If you have Boris “Title Crawl” then you should have Boris “Title 3D” (both of these should be on the FCP install discs).
You want to use “Title 3D” for creating titles that do not “roll” or “crawl’.

You need to set FCP to render at Highest Quality.
And you must NEVER attempt to judge QUALITY on the computer monitor.
You can ONLY judge quality on an EXTERNAL VIDEO MONITOR.

The camcorder does not “know” what kind of source you are sending to the external mic input (as long as its at “mic-level” everything will be fine).
So any feature that works with “just a mic” plugged in (or NOT plugged in, as in using the built-in on-camera mic) will work with whatever is connected to that input jack.
So, yes, the auto-level will still work with a Beachtek or other adapter/pad/accessory.

That will NEVER change with SD.
It has been thus since NTSC color began.
In the studio, we had entire WALLS full of monitors.
Clients would say, “Which one do I look at? I like the way it looks on THAT one.”
I’d say, “Look at THAT one, because it only looks that way on that monitor.”Of course YOU want to CREATE on a monitor that is fully set-up and calibrated so that you KNOW that the image is correct, based on a “standard”…
but after it “leaves your hands” it can be viewed on “ANY OLD THING” and who knows how it will look then?And, unless you can spend BIG BUCKS for a true “critical control-room” flat-screen, CRT monitors are STILL offer the truest image for color grading.
