The way i used to work was to use Aux1/2 to DVD / VHS (prefader) and use Aux3/4 for monitoring (postfader).
And of course you need a few busses, at least one stereo out and two more to avoid feedback.
Normally i now have 4 busses plus stereo out, bus 1/2 go to the NLE, bus 3/4 go to the deck(s), stereo to monitor and meters. It is hardly in use, as most audio now travels over SDI.
Do spend some money on it to get it right, even get a patch panel if you like. Time saved for NOT having to think about it when working will pay off very soon.

Last but not least, there was a buggy version of DVD SP that rendered still menus as fields instead of frames.
Perhaps try an update.

September 1, 2009 at 7:56 am in reply to: HELP! Transcoding and batch importing lost XDCAM files. What exactly did you do on the transcoding?
If you have transcoded IN AVID and have imported the files file based (rather than digitizing), you CAN do a batch import.
(This is exactly what i am doing now on a large project with over a hundred disks)Just select clips or sequence, select ‘batch import’
If you see a disk label, you’re golden. There are other ways to make it happen as well, but for that i need some more information.

It takes huge amounts of money or time to do it right. The problem is not the gear anymore. You hire cams that are switchable, or you could hire 24p or 23.976 gear.
One big gotcha is the power frequency. It’s 50 Hz in europe, making shooting under fluoricent light very dangerous.

probably not, but why not connect the beta to a mixer?
A decent one can be had for the price of a couple of beta SP tapes…Bouke

Mark,
The LiveCut app. can be downloaded here:
https://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=29But there is only a Windows demo.
Mail me direct if you want a Mac version.Keep in mind that to connect it to the switcher, you need a custom IO board.
(I can send you one if you like)Bouke

Pardon my lingo, but…
Seems like a fine example of bad preparation. Why find out now, not before the shoot?
You could have use my LiveCut application, and then you would have an EDL (or in combo with Andreas, a ready done multicam XML) that matches the line cut.
A way cheaper method was to record the direcors sound to one of the iso’s, so you could just edit like the shots were called.
(If they indeed called all the shots…)But why do you need to redo the entire line cut? Is the quality so bad you have to go back to the originals?

This is a very old thread.
Meanwhile Subbits is Unicode capable.
For that i had to remove the PAC and EBU STL export.
(Spruce / dvd SP STL is still there)
And yes, i am still developing it, and yes, updates are free.
PAC and EBU STL will be there again in the future, but no guarantees when that will be.BUT, as mentioned before, PAC is a format that comes in many flavours, and is not without risk.
I’m more than willing to sell you an old copy with Pac support, but i cannot give any support on that, so it is not a wise idea…Bouke

First, i’m biased as hell as i’ve written a subtitle tool:
https://www.videotoolshed.com/?page=products&pID=12I totally disagree that FCP is suitable for subtitle creation.
It takes way too long, and you have no options to move text from one title to another fast. Also, text tools like search/replace etc. are missing. Now for quality of the final product:
Burning in the subtitles (render them in) will give you the best quality. If that is not possible:As for quality, that highly depends on how you work.
If you have room to spare on your DVD, you can put the show on twice, once with burned in titles, once without. If not, and you want to use DVD titles.
DO NOT use text based STL into DVD SP. It sucks big time, as you have very limited control over the final look.
Also keep in mind that you have only 4 colors to play with. One is for transparancy, leaves you with white for the text, black for the shadow/outline and ONE color for anti-aliasing between black and white.
What i do is render the titles using my render engine (comes with Subbits), then feed those images to Photoshop where i use the Chris Linke plugin to make DVD subtitles.
This works very well, but is a bit more work. If you have a lot to do it will defintily pay off in the end.If you want to see some samples, let me know.

This is a valid question, and yes, if you can, do so.
I’m not sure if this will fix your problems, but Fat32 is ancient and not recommended.Bouke
