I’m working with compressed OfflineRT HD footage. After I import all of the files (there are almost 700 clips) into FCP, they are all there and fine. If I disconnect the hard drive and re-open the project, however, almost half of the files go offline. When I highlight and click on a batch to reconnect them, the search does not find the files. If I uncheck the match reel box, I can choose the files, but it will only allow me to connect one at a time (which would take far too long).

Why are the files going offline after the hard drive is disconnected and reconnected? Is this a problem with the drive? The files play fine on the drive and nothing changes there each time.

I’m running FCP Version 6.0.6 on a MacBook Pro (10.4.11)
My settings match the Offline RT HD (photo jpeg) 23.98 footage.

    Thanks!

Well, you disconnect the drive, the files on it are no longer available to FCP, so they go offline. So don’t disconnect the drive with FCP open. Close FCP, disconnect the drive…and don’t open the application again until you reconnect the drive.

Sorry, I guess I didn’t specify that. I haven’t disconnected with FCP open. It is after I close FCP and disconnect that drive that the problem is happening. The strange thing is that all of the files are located in the same folder on the drive, yet only some go offline once FCP is re-opened.

Although i pretend to know a tremendous amount on the subject, this is new, so my totally educated WILD GUESS.
Seems FCP does not recognize the files to be valid.

Repair permissions, trash prefs, yadda, yadda etcetera. (and more goat blood)

I tried trashing the preferences already. Haven’t tried repairing the permissions yet; I’ll do that now. It seems to recognize the files because it will reconnect manually with the “matched reel” setting unchecked, but it will not do it in batches…

I hope this isn’t a completely ridiculous question, but is it very possibly because the drive is formatted FAT32? I never reformatted the drive when I got it (mistake), and now I have a bunch of files on it that I can’t afford to lose. Should I attempt to move everything to another drive, reformat it, then put them back on the drive?

This is a valid question, and yes, if you can, do so.
I’m not sure if this will fix your problems, but Fat32 is ancient and not recommended.

Thanks for being polite. I am going to try doing that, but I guess I have to back everything up thoroughly before doing so. I never realized or was taught (I recently got a Master’s degree in film) that I needed to reformat my drives. It turns out that all of them are formatted that way, but I’ve never had any troubles in the past. I have no idea if it’s worth it to try to reformat all of them or not…
