I was partially wrong in my previous post you referred to.
Over 422, you have to ‘ask’ the deck to tell the current timecode.
You can ask specific for Ltc, Vitc, CTL or UB. Or, and i suspect that’s what Avid does, ask for ‘auto’ and have the deck decide what is best for you.
No way the deck will decide you get UB instead of current time.
So you need an appl. that will ask the right questions. But as there is no 422 on the cheapo HDV decks, i cannot be of help here… (i don’t speak firewire, yet….)

If you use TOD on multiple cams, be sure you have the time EXACTLY the same.

Normally one would lock on cam to the other, and have them both run in free run.
Now this is accurate +/- 4 frames over a day.
But this REALLY sucks when you have to ingest entire tapes in FCP. You want continuous TC over your tapes, (rec run) to be able to dig entire tapes without endless prerolls / breaks (specially in HDV.

So next time, find a TC generator (can be anything that outputs LTC, just record some onto your Ipod or whatever, get a cheapo FM transmitter and broadcast the LTC.
Use a cheapo FM receiver and record the LTC on one of the audio channels.

Next, ingest the entrie tape and have a piece of software (i’m writing it right now) to seperate the clips, set Aux TC and re-import that into FCP.
Hassle free digitizing, immediatly syncing of your clips.

Keep an eye at my site, it will be there in a week. The FCP AUX tc application that is there does not work for you, as you don’t have RS 422 on your deck.

I’m not in the mood of prooving anything right now, but here is my take:

I can set a custom TC for clips in FCP. Working on that right now for having ‘decent’ LTC reading and subclipping based on LTC.

I have written a VITC reader already, and i ‘could’ merge the two.
Now for that, the captured QT ‘must’ display the funny dots on the top.

If you can manage to do so, i’m able to help you out.

But there is another way.
If you have a deck that is able to read the user bits and has 422 control, i’m able to read the user bits over 422 simultaniously with the ‘normal’ TC. I can generate a log list from there, but i cannot do more than have my loggin application read the TC breaks, and (auto) log while setting the clip name (or comment or so) to the user bits. Log lists and XML can carry Aux TC to FCP, but it disappears after digging. (so i have found out the hard way…)

McSoft works. We run it here, although MOJO does NOT work.
But for us it’s good enough for rock ‘n roll.

Avid will definitly NOT capture AVI, but agreed, Avid captures are not compatible with FCP without transcoding.
If you want to log on PC, use an external decent logging program and export a log list to FCP, have FCP capture that.

FCP would not know…
The setup of the deck will be the judge of that. PVW beta has a bug that makes you want to set it to ltc, most decent decks do it auto.
No matter how, the tc info in the 422 signal is what the deck wants it to be (or how you have set it up).

And yes, if you have your deck set up wrong you are able to insert wrong VITC or even erase it.

I have no idea if Belle Nuit will import your files, but there is a free trial version on Matthias site.
If you can export to text, my subtitle application also can do this. (I also have a free demo online).

I would not worry about the format. All mentioned applications can render out to any resolution.
Personally i prefer to render to a square pixel format and have Photoshop to do a batch conversion to the desired output format/resolution.

Your biggest challenge is to set them at the correct position in Premiere. Most commont trick is to have a macro and an EDL. (I don’t think you can fool Premiere into linking to still files from an EDL, but i could be mistaken..)
