But, once set up properly it’s doable.
And not using Avid for MpegII encoding is a good thing.
If you’re really want to be into the DVD business, you need a serious amont of control over the MpegII encoding.
Also, you want to free your Avid from the encoding as it is typically a very slow process.

It does not downconvert, it’s just that the pixels are not square, so on display it will look right.
720 x 480 is the max. Smaller is possible on a DVD, larger isn’t.
Dive into the square/non square/anamorphic math, you’ll need it to make good looking things.

dunno why you want to do this (as i think it’s ugly, i prefer a shadow and outline, like my FCP text generator creates)

I think the Digital Heaven subtitle plugin can do this.
From memory, this will set you back a hefty 10 bucks.

Mine is free, and comes with a demo of a subtitle prep tool
(if you have more than about 20 titles to do, it will be faster to use that. It has a learning curve but it will pay off in the end.

you need the Recut function to move the titles.
BUT, it’s not that obvious how it works, and it contains a turkey (that i will work out this week!)
how to work it in the current version:
Sort the list, go to a specific title, choose recut and enter a positive or negative TC. All HIGHER titles get shifted.

I want to change this a bit, so you can shift all titles to a specific point (probably the CTI).

BUT, i strongly reccomend to work on the final piece, as it will save a huge amount of time in the end.

Have a look at the waveform in an audio editor.
Zoom in to app. 1 frame. You should be seeing a block wave (with some blocks twice as wide as others, those represent zeros, two small blocks are ones)
It often happen with broken TC generators that the signal is ‘spikey’. If that’s the case my app. cannot read it. (Although a human can probably decode it. It just isn’t a fun job when you have lots of clips to do…

If it is a block wave, please sent me a piece to study why it isn’t working for you.

Although i love to take your money, personally i would take another approach.
If you have the stuff in DAT, you have to ingest by normal capturing. I would buy an LTC to 422 box and use that.
Way cheaper… (Hey, i’m Dutch!)

First thing to do is go to http://www.spherico.com, look around there. (Andreas has written a lot of audio sync problems in FCP, perhaps his help section on BWFtoXML will give you aa answer.
If not, just cut out 1 frame every 7 minutes in a place that allows it (typically applause after a song..)
Quick and dirty, but it does the job.

The reason is that AVI (although perhaps in DV format) has a different way of storing TC.
Depending on the amount of clips you have (and the importancy of correct TC) there are two options:
Cheapest is to google for AVI tools. There are a few out there that display TC (Enosoft is one of them). If you know the startTC, you can manually alter the start TC of the clip.
The second option is to contact me direct (bouke@videotoolshed.com), as i have a custom build AVI to QT converter, that can maintain the AVI tc in the new created QT’s, or create a QT tc track in the original AVIS wrapped in a QT (aka by ref)
Sad part is that this only works on Windows, so you either need an Intel mac with bootcamp (no idea if parallels is going to work) or a PC to do the conversion.

watch on a proper, interlaced monitor.
You’re going from 23.976 to 29.97, thus your DVD player is inserting pulldown.
This is exactly like it should be, and every hollywood feature is done the same way.
