  • Creating targa lower 1/3 media

Posted by Chris Bové on April 30, 2008 at 2:34 pm

    Desired outcome:
Animated lower 1/3 in the form of a targa file with an alpha channel – for use in broadcast (non-editing) situation.

    Created in:
    MCA 2.8.1

    Question:
What is the workflow? (I’ve never made a targa animation from an Avid before.)

    Thanks in advance!!!

Forget it. You need an alpha, and avid cannot output that.
Use AE, everything is in the box…

It can be done, but you’ll need to jump through hoops. It’s not really what Avid’s designed for. I second the AE suggestion, definitely the easier way.

Dylan – I love learning processes. Even though I’ll be doing this particular task in AE, what is the hoop-jumping process to do it in the Avid?

    Thanks!

    Here’s how I’d do it…

Because Avid can’t export a file with an alpha channel, you’ll need to export the matte and fill seperately. You have the lower third in Avid–export it as a Fill targa sequence just as you want it to look on air. Then select the matte key of your lower third and set it to Show Alpha so you get a black and white matte. Export that as a targa sequence.

You’ll now need to either take both into After Effects or another compositing program to set the Fill targe sequence to use the Matte targe sequence as a luma matte, likely inverted, and rerender it as a Master targa sequence with alpha. Or, if you have the hardware to do it, use the Matte targa sequence as a luma matte to key out the lowerthird as it goes on air.

Again, much, much easier to do it in AE.

    That’s how I’d do it!

    Michael.

    Pretty much what Michael said.

There are some potential issues with a precomposed fill channel in doing it that way. It certainly can be done and I have used the method to export a Avid-built baseline key to be usable in a linear edit suite (although in that case I actually played them out to tape as a fill and matte signal).
