the ability for the I/O to act as a standalone converter, or do upconverts thru the Kona 2 did not exist until NAB2005, so you could have been updating daily before NAB, and it would not have given you these features.

Please clarify – this system worked great unti you got down to the last 100 Gigs of storage, or this system never played back at 10 bit uncomrpessed, even when the drives were empty?

My advice to you is to purchase the Sonnet card right now, and play with it before you get in too deep. Make sure that it is stable enough for you. Just don’t believe what you read on these forums – try it yourself before making a big investment.

Hi Greg –
download the firmware update for your AJA I/O, then the new AJA I/O control panel, and then the new Kona 2 control panel. Everything will work just fine. If it does not, I will come over to you.

If you boys would simply use the AJA HDP (or Decklink HD Link) and a Sony
SDM-P234b for $1999, you will get a 23″ full 1920×1200 resolution, and not have to worry about the 800 line limitation – aside from the fact that you can’t even get the PVM-20L5/1 anymore.

And just for the record, I would take an “old” PVM-20L5/1 ANYDAY over the “new” Sony Luma LDM series.

Hi Jim –
Even though I live to disagree with Walter, he is absolutely correct about the J3. If you have the J3, it does every damn SD format you want – Digi Beta Beta SX and regular Beta SP, and then you don’t need the AJA I/O LA. It is a great investment.

yes – Kona 2 will playback the 720p sequence, and give you a simultaneous SDI downconvert, AND give you a NTSC Y R-Y B-Y analog component downconvert as well to a Beta VTR or component TV monitor – all at the same time. And yes, it does this in capture mode as well as editing and playback.

Walter was correct – I thought all of you were crazy, because you get the impression that you MUST pay for it, or give your credit card #. But as you go thru it, you see that you can still get the free .sit expander.

As you go to client sites, you can’t go to everyone “oh yea, let me just download this great new software from AJA for you, oh by the way, give me your credit card because even though the upgrade is free, the Stuffit is now 50 bucks !”. But as you so correctly pointed out, if you keep going in the site, and pass thru all the “buy full version” or “upgrade for $$$”, you see where the free expander is. I certainly was not going to chance buying it once, and putting it on everyone’s system for free.

So, if you spend $500 more, and we absolutely guarantee that it will work for you, are you basically saying that you cannot generate the revenue to pay for this “extra cost” in one or two days? Because I can assure you that the right thing to do is to get the AJA I/O LA. You obviously have a project that requires Beta footage, and you obviously own a Beta VTR? Is is possible that you will earn less than $500 profit from doing this project?

I respectfully disagree with your answer. I have seen this view/external video/off (or all frames) mysteriously switch to OFF in the simpliest systems that are using a Canopus or Datavideo DV to composite converter as well as all the “professional” AJA, Blackmagic and Pinnacle Hardware. Is this a bug with the Apple software? Is this “us” doing something stupid? -I don’t know, but I do know that it happens all the time, and it drives everyone crazy, and you just get used to it.
