there are countless HD shows being created now that rely on SD archival footage. I do a lot of work for Disney and Universal related production companies, and have massive libraries of footage that must be brought into new HD shows that are created. The use of the upconversion features is vital, and budgets are not always there to just go out and shoot the same material, just to get it “fresh” with an HD camera.Bob Zelin

I re-read your post. The Madras is not going to embed the audio for you. The Madras should convert your analog audio to AES/EBU for you (as you state that your mackie mixer feeds the Madras analog inputs). You DO NOT hookup the Madras SDI out to SDI 2 Input on the Kona. The Kona 2 breakdout cables (or K box) have XLR AES inputs. Take a simple XLR cable, and plug in the AES XLR output of your Madras into the AES XLR input of the Kona 2 breakout cable (or K Box), and everything will work. Do NOT use SDI input 2 (the BNC connector) for this application.Bob Zelin

The UL4D card will do nothing for U160 drives, however, you will get full performance with U320 drives from the UL4D.
However, in this day and age, few are buying big SCSI arrays with U320 drives.
The HUGE Media Vault with the old UL3D will work just fine and dandy for 8 and 10 bit SDI, and DVCPro HD. You will only have to change to a faster drive array for uncompressed HD. And if you are crazy, and have lots of money to burn, remember that the old Kona HD cards (not the Kona 2) worked every day doing uncomrpessed HD with the UL3D and 8 SCSI drives striped together at RAID 0.
But for doing the Component Beta work, just get the AJA IO LA. The Blackmagic Multibridge will be great when it if finally released, but as many of you know, there are issues in manufacturing with the input stage right now, and that is why it’s not shipping. But it will be amazing once it’s released. If you have to get to work RIGHT NOW – just get the AJA I/O LA. It’s a great unit.

I have great news for you – I was confused by the same thing when I first tried it. The selection to swtich between the SDI Embedded audio and the AES/EBU audio is done on the Kona Control Panel application, in the applications folder of your MAC G5. It’s on the first tab – INPUT – on the bottom right. Switch to AES/EBU instead of SDI Embedded, and you can get your audio into the AES XLR jacks.

I just did the upconversion yesterday. The upconversion from SDI to HD SDI is teriffic, however the 4:3 image is stretched, but that is the very nature of going from 4:3 to 16:9. You will be very happy, and for $2400, you will be VERY VERY happy, compared to buying a $100,000 Teranex, that is not longer manufacturered.

Since you have the Decklink, I assume you have the computer, drives, monitors, etc.

you have amazed me. Are you telling me you can do 1:1 uncompressed on a Firewire 800 drive with an AVID Xpress Pro with Mojo. I almost don’t believe you. I know that this is getting off the subject of your question, but it is “common knowlege” from AVID that the minimum configuration for 1:1 playback from any DNX product (Xpress Pro or Adrenaline) is 4 SCSI drives striped RAID 0 across the 2 SCSI busses of an ATTO or LSI host on the xw8000 or MACG5. The very fact that you could do 15:1 with a Firewire 800 drive would surprise me, but the fact that you state that you are using a single Firewire 800 drive, and successfully getting 1:1 uncompressed with AVID Xpress Pro with Mojo is unbelieveable to me.I am going to take the liberty of posting your information on the AVID-L forum.
