I have a Pana 1200 hooked up to sdi 1 and a Madras analog to sdi encoder hook up to sdi 2. I’m in the middle of standard def projects using dv and dvc tapes on the pana 1200 and running component beta thru the madras. The analog audio from all my decks is fed to the madras via a Mackie mixer. If i select sdi 1 I can’t use the xlr audio, only the embedded. This behavior seems to be new with the big Kona software upgrade. I’m running os 10.3.8. Anyone else have this problem?

I have great news for you – I was confused by the same thing when I first tried it. The selection to swtich between the SDI Embedded audio and the AES/EBU audio is done on the Kona Control Panel application, in the applications folder of your MAC G5. It’s on the first tab – INPUT – on the bottom right. Switch to AES/EBU instead of SDI Embedded, and you can get your audio into the AES XLR jacks.

    Hi –
I re-read your post. The Madras is not going to embed the audio for you. The Madras should convert your analog audio to AES/EBU for you (as you state that your mackie mixer feeds the Madras analog inputs). You DO NOT hookup the Madras SDI out to SDI 2 Input on the Kona. The Kona 2 breakdout cables (or K box) have XLR AES inputs. Take a simple XLR cable, and plug in the AES XLR output of your Madras into the AES XLR input of the Kona 2 breakout cable (or K Box), and everything will work. Do NOT use SDI input 2 (the BNC connector) for this application.

Bob thanks for your quick replies. I’m sorry my postings confused you. Yes i am feeding the aes xlr audio outs from the madras to the xlr ins on the breakout box. Like i said it works great when i use beta tapes but wasn’t working when i use dv tapes. Well a little clearheaded trouble shooting this morning after the deadline has passed made me realize that in order for the analog audio to get to the kona aes xlr connections from the panny deck, i must first TURN THE MADRAS ON! As Homer Simpson would say, “DOOOH”
