there is no “book”. Every day is a new experience. You have to jump into the water, and figure out stuff, or have someone more knowlegeable to help you. We just sat around today with our working Kona 2/AJ-HD1200A system, and figured out how to get the J-H3 to work (the sony VTR), and what menu’s you have to setup (23.98PD means PULL DOWN !). You ain’t gonna get that in a book published 6 months ago – you have to READ the Sony manuals (or Evertz manuals, or what ever gear you are dealing with), and TRY IT , and make mistakes. What will now take me 2 minutes in the future took over an hour to figure out. I never said that you should not do this HD job, I said that you should GET HELP if it’s over your head. The only way to learn is to sit there, and suffer a little. Eventually, you will figure it out – and then, you will be the expert, and teach me !

Have you simply gone to EASY SETUPS and selected a setup, like Betacam 8 bit uncompressed? If it’s on DV, you ain’t gonna get anything ! If you still don’t get anything after you do an easy setup, go into audio/video settings, click on Capture Presets, scroll down to whatever is checked, double click on this, and see what is actually selected in this window for the video input.

    Josh –
you have not specified SO MANY details about this project. IS is 23.98, or 59.94. How did you input this material – what VTR did you input the material from? Was it a Sony JH-3, or did you rent a F500 to dump out. Did you use the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, so your project is 59.94, or is it a 23.98 project? Do you want to create a 23.98 master, or do you want a 59.94 master for television distribution? If you want a 23.98 master, you will need a tri level sync generator.

Josh – you may be in over your head, and the little posts from this forum may not
be enough. You should consider hiring someone to come in and help you – perhaps a tech from the rental company that will supply the HDW-F500. This is not a beta machine – there are a million setup menus on this VTR, and they are changed all the time, depending on what the project requirements are. You have given so few details to us on your original source tapes, and what the master tape must be. You have to know this stuff in advance, to plan for a smooth project. Working in HD is unfortunately much more complicated that working with regular NTSC video, becuase of the various formats, framerates, and numerous settings on these VTRs – particularly Sony VTR’s.

If you post more details about your job – how you inputed your HD footage – what VTR you used, what your framerate is, what the delivery requirements are – they I can give you more info.

The good news is that Jim Blokland is about to make a donation to
    https://www.americanhumane.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pa_disaster_relief
which I will take care of (Bob Zelin) – which is my favorite charity, and worthy of more than my donation for this issue.

The bad news is that, although I see the very quote on the Digidesign website that the 888/24 can be used as a stand alone converter, I assure you that this is incorrect information. Today is labor day 9/5/05, and I cannot confirm with Digidesign this misprint on their website today, but I will do so tomorrow. If I am wrong, I will double the donation.

ps – as you state the Universal Slave DriverIS a standalone unit. This was never in question.

    Jim says –
Regarding the 888 interface, everywhere I’ve researched states that the 888 box can be used as a standalone convertor.

Your research is incorrect. The 888 CANNOT be used as a stand alone converter. If you can show me that I am wrong, I will contribute $40 in your name to any Hurricane Katrina charity that you want – just prove me wrong with any website stating this information, or a phone # of someone who told you this. I don’t care if someone pays you $1000 to take the Universal Slave Driver AND 888 box off their hands – you aint’ gonna use it as a stand alone converter.

  • The VTM-200 has multiple setups on it. You can set the VTM-200 (and all vectorscopes) to 75% bars and 100% bars. The Videotek VTM-200 vectorscope function must be set to 75% bars. I don’t care if you are using an AVID, an old linear suite, and old Grass Valley color bar generator like the SCB-100N, a Horita test generator, or the AJA. Set your vectorscope setup in the scope (read the damn manual) to 75% bars, and it won’t fall short on the targets on the vectorscope.

Videotek VTM-200 has multiple inputs – for both analog and Digital – inputs A and B are analog inputs, and inputs C and D are SDI digital inputs. The videotek VTM-200 is a wonderful external scope, and it can monitor BOTH the analog and digital outputs of the AJA product. It’s Sunday today, so forget your damn life, and READ THE MANUAL.

    Jim –
I do not know what you are talking about. If you take your Beta VTR, when you genlock it to a color black generator (and lock your Kona 2 or AJA I/O to the SAME color black generator – you DO own one, right ?????) – your audio will be in sync. You simply take your analog audio from the Beta VTR, stick it into the Flying Cow to turn it into AES/EBU, and it will be in sync. You can also use the new AJA HD10AMA to embed the analog audio into the SDI stream.

The Digidesign 888 Audio Interface box CANNOT be used as a standalone converter. It is used in conjunction with a Pro Tools Core card, or an AVID Amadeus interface card with the Media Composer Application. It will NEVER allow you to use it as a stand alone converter. I don’t know where you got the impression that you could do this. In a video enviornment, we use NTSC color black to keep things in sync, not word clock. Even with the Digidesign 888 Audio Interface, the way AVID used it was to use the Digidesign Video Slave Driver. You would send COLOR BLACK into the Video Slave Driver, and this would create the superclock that would go into the 888 box. Even if you had no video editing system, and just wanted to use the 888 to lock to video sync, you would use the Digidesign Universal Slave Driver to LOCK TO HOUSE BLACK, and then take the superclock output to go into the 888. YOU DONT BUY A WORD CLOCK GENERATOR. The Digi Universal Slave Driver (just for the record) has been replaced with the Digidesign Sync I/O, and the 888 has also been replaced by the 192HD interface.

Bottom line – just make sure you own a black generator, and get your little Flying Cow box, and away you go. This whole thing would be much easier if you simply purchased an AJA I/O LA – then you could forget about all these external converters.

Walter is correct – go into your Kona control panel – bet it’s in Video In, instead of Free Run, or External Ref. The crackle goes away when you get it off Video In.
