you DO NOT want the 2200, as it requires a special twist lock plug, so you will have to hire an electrician for it’s install. I suggest that you purchase the very nice, rack mounted APC Smart UPS 1500 RM2, which is a 1500 watt unit (enough for everything you own for one system). It’s 2 rack units, it has 6 plugs on the rear, and it uses a standard plug. It’s about $600 and every mail order company carriers it.
If you are in NY, you can contact Virtual Media, and get the Powerware PW5125, which is on almost every AVID system sold today. This unit is about $100 cheaper than the APC Smart UPS 1500 RM.

The absolute CHEAPEST way to accomplish all routing is with patch bays. A super hi quality Canare HD rated patchbay (the 242U-DVJAW) is $519 at Markertek, and can handle analog composite, component, SDI and HD-SDI. If you don’t want to solder (for your audio), you can use $50 Behringer PX-3000 audio patch bays to route your audio (all 1/4 TRS). This way, you can send anything anywhere you want, and you will not be stuck with a small Laird router that you will outgrow rapidly if you are successful. And weather you get a router (at any price) or the patch bays, you will STILL need lots of cables, and cables COST A LOT OF MONEY. Even Radio Shack charges lots of money for cables today, and they are total garbage. The cabling to wire up an audio mixer costs more than most audio mixers these days. Welcome to the 21st century.

The only time I ever use tri level sync is when the customer MUST work in 23.98 (or 24). But in my world, since everyone is using Panasonic HD VTR’s which have the 2:3 pulldown (turing the 23.98 into 59.94), or Sony JH-3 VTR’s (which do the same pulldown trick), I almost NEVER have to use a tri level sync gen, as everything is being done at standard frame rate (59.94), so a cheapie black generator works just fine for these projects. However, as David said, if you MUST output at 23.98 to (for example) a Sony HDW-M2000/10, you MUST MUST MUST use a tri level sync generator to lock everything. Since George Lucas is not one of my clients, I don’t ever see ANYONE dumping back at 24p. I guess if I lived in LA, it would be a different story.Bob Zelin
ps – and you were right, long after the PCI-X G5, the Quad G5, the Kona 2, the Blackmagic Extreme, the AVID Adrenaline are gone, the $5000 Evertz 7750 Tri Level Sync Gen will be completely usable, just as everyone’s NTSC black genenerator they owned (back in the linear video days) is just as good as any sold today. -

If your Beta VTR looks good, but your Panasonic VTR does not, you probably have an encoder board mis-alignment with your Panasonic VTR. If you have a component monitor, plug the Panasonic Y Pb Pr directly into the YRB inputs of your Component TV. Does it look pink ? ? If it does, you have a problem with your VTR, and it needs a professional alignment. Sony VTR’s can suffer the same problem.

your PC stations better have DVI-D monitor cards to drive these monitors.
A standard DVI (DVI-I) card will not drive a 30″ monitor.bob Zelin

many times, like now, you are busy and don’t have an understanding of how this stuff works, and just don’t have the time to figure it out. When you get time, sit in front of your system, let your SD VTR play, and SCREW AROUND with all the setting in the Kona Control panel. up convert, down convert, play with the analog out section, play with the control section. Make mistakes – try to break it. See all the silly things that happen when you click on the wrong position. This will make you much more comftorable, when you are in a real session, and something goes wrong.

The PVM-14L5/1 is still available at B+H Photo. Most people today will get a cheap consumer TV (or a more expensive PVM-20L2) for SD, and then get a large screen, or 23″ LCD (Cinema, Dell, etc) with AJA HDP or Blackmagic HD link for the HD signal. If you get a large LCD or Plasma, you can use the K-Box to drive the analog HD component input.
Get used to this idea – 2 monitors. The PVM series is almost 100% gone now.

open the Kona Control Panel, and you will see a graphic representation of the upconversion. You can try this thru the Kona control panel without even opening up FCP, to make sure it works for you.
