I’ve been advised to get an APC SMARTUPS 2200VA USB 120V uninterrupted power supply unit and a network power supply management card to protect a fully populated (14) Xserve RAID, and 2 G5 macs. Total bill is about $1300.

There are other units that aren’t nearly this pricey, and I only need 3 devices protected for a few minutes for shutdown. Do I really need that much voltage?

APC seems to be Apple’s favorite brand. Any opinions about this?

I have an APC Back-UPS XS 1500 (I think that it is about $200) on all three of my Xserve RAID systems at my office. All have a G5 and monitor pulled in as well as on Xserve RAID. We did have on incident when the power went off, and we had a good 10 minutes to shut everything off. I don’t think that the APC 1500, that I use, interfaces with the RAID. But it is not a concern for me, as if the systems are unattended there is not chance for data loss, unlike if the RAID was being used with a server.

    Hope this answers your question.

you DO NOT want the 2200, as it requires a special twist lock plug, so you will have to hire an electrician for it’s install. I suggest that you purchase the very nice, rack mounted APC Smart UPS 1500 RM2, which is a 1500 watt unit (enough for everything you own for one system). It’s 2 rack units, it has 6 plugs on the rear, and it uses a standard plug. It’s about $600 and every mail order company carriers it.

If you are in NY, you can contact Virtual Media, and get the Powerware PW5125, which is on almost every AVID system sold today. This unit is about $100 cheaper than the APC Smart UPS 1500 RM.
