simple – GENLOCK EVERYTHING to a common black burst generator. Put color black into the REF VIDEO input of your HDW-M2000 VTR, (if there is a switcher there for the AB roll system, it gets the same color black), and put black into the REFERENCE IN on the Kona LHe card, and on the Kona Control Panel, select External Reference in the Control tab.

You will now be in sync.

no abuse here – this is a multi channel balancing amplifier – great for matching levels to VHS dub racks, etc. For those that refuse to use a mixer, this is an excellent way to match levels between the AJA I/O and analog gear like VHS machines, consumer CD and DVD players, etc. with RCA jacks.

I too use product from Addenda, which work very well. If you were to purchase an AVID Adrenaline right now, running on a brand new HP xw8200 PC, AVID would provide you with an Addenda converter (although you need the opposite conversion, to take RS422 and convert it to RS232).

I agree – DVCProHD for your compression, and use the JH-3 HD Cam VTR as your player into your FCP AJA system, set to 23PD, which will ensure that you have the 2:3 pulldown so you can output with no aggrivation.

rental VTR’s get very beat up all the time. PLEASE simply put up bars and tone from your FCP system – output into your VTR, and put the VTR manually into an insert edit from the front control panel. It’s easy. You will tell in 2 seconds if the VTR has a problem.

I had a similar problem to you once, and it was due to an unstable black reference between the K-Box and a Digi Beta VTR. Make sure that both machines have a common black reference, and that the control tab is checked to Ext Ref, and not video in.

you need an AJA I/O. In the future, you can buy the Kona 2 or Kona 3. The Kona 2 is for PCI-X computers, and the Kona 3 is for PCI Express computers.
The AJA I/O works with both, and it will do composite, component and SDI. It will also act as an upconverter to HD for you when you get the Kona later on.

Please reconfirm this statement. Are you saying that AJA emailed you back and said that, in fact, the dual 2.3 is not qualified for the Kona 3?

Everyone does this – especially me – I have been doing this for almost 25 years, built countless edit systems, and just 2 weeks ago, I plugged in all the inputs to a mixer in the INSERT INPUTS instead of the line inputs, and stood there saying to myself “crap, the damn mixer is dead”. We all do it.

you say that when you ETT, it even displays on the VTR meters, correct ?
But when you play back the VTR, you get no audio – correct ?
ITS YOUR VTR ! Do a manual insert edit test on your VTR, not using FCP. Just send in bars and tone from the FCP system to the VTR, and do a manual
insert edit – if you get no audio (but see the meters moving in E/E and confidence mode) – it’s your VTR.
