  • Can I run a Kona 3 on my dual core 2.3 GHz?

Posted by Dan Brockett on March 5, 2006 at 12:05 am

    Hi all:

Just downloaded the manual for the Kona 3 in anticipation of purchasing one and discovered, to my dismay, the manual is saying that the Kona 3 requires a dual 2.5 GHz minimum and is recommended to run on a dual 2.7GHz or the Quad. So it is looking as if I made the wrong decision in getting the dual 2.3 instead of the Quad. At the time I bought, December 10th, the 2.3 and the Quad were the only choices, there was no 2.5 or 2.7 PCI-e.

Let this be a caveat for anyone contemplating the Kona 3, make sure you get a quad!

I e-mailed Aja tech support to confirm this. Anyone wanna buy a barely used dual 2.3? Damn, I even upgraded the graphics card to the 7800 and put in about 3 and half gigs of RAM, now my party plans are all spoiled. Guess I will have to lose some money on the 2.3 and kick in another $1,200.00 to get a quad. Dagnabit!

    Hi Dan –
Please reconfirm this statement. Are you saying that AJA emailed you back and said that, in fact, the dual 2.3 is not qualified for the Kona 3?

    thanks –

    Hi Bob:

No, not yet, I am sure I will hear back from them tomorrow, I e-mailed them yesterday. But based upon the owners manual, only owners of dual 2.5s and 2.7s and Quads can use the Kona 3. I am hoping that perhaps the manual was written before they could test a dual core 2.3, as you may or may not know, the dual core 2.3 equals or outperforms the pre dual-core 2.5 as far as benchmark testing so I have a sliver of hope left.

Will report back as soon as Aja tech supprt does to me.

    Best,

    Dan

    What about the LHe instead?

    Hi Oliver:

I would rather upgrade the dual 2.3 to a quad to use the Kona 3. I need the upconversion function and the multi-channel audio options that the Kona 3 offers.

The minimum for the LHe is a 2GHz system with a 2.5GHz recommended so a 2.3GHz would probably workk okay but that means I would have to have all NTSC material upconverted at a dub house or would have to buy a separate box. I think that’s what so appealing about the Kona 3, it basically does everything.

    Hi,

Any of the new PCIe G5’s are fine for the KONA 3, including the Dual 2.3Ghz.

    Aja Sales:

Next question, can you tell me when B&H will receive Kona 3s and Kona 3 breakout boxes? Is there another dealer nearby (Burbank, Ca.) who has them in stock right now?

KONA 3’s and K3-Box’s are shipping worldwide each day, including to B&H. You should call your favorite AJA reseller and ask what their stock situation is. A list of these dealers can be found here:
