Problem editing a program to Digibeta VTR w. SDI/embedded Audio from FCP/Kona 2.
The audio plays fine during ETT, and even displays on the VTRs meters – but only records some times (though I can hear it when scrubbing the tape). Picture comes through fine every time.

We diden’t have this problem 2 weeks ago – and have only performed upgrade of Soundtrack (to latest version) and installed After Effects 7. Suspected it to be a tape control error, and tried to control deck from USB twinspan adapter – but problem remained.

    Using FCP 5.04 – Kona 2 v 2.1 – Tiger OS 10.4.5

you say that when you ETT, it even displays on the VTR meters, correct ?
But when you play back the VTR, you get no audio – correct ?
ITS YOUR VTR ! Do a manual insert edit test on your VTR, not using FCP. Just send in bars and tone from the FCP system to the VTR, and do a manual
insert edit – if you get no audio (but see the meters moving in E/E and confidence mode) – it’s your VTR.

The VTR is rented from an AVID production studio – and they use it every day without problems.
This is why I suspect it to be a Kona2 or/and FCP related problem. After all it is the NLE that tells the VTR what and where to insert. The funny thing is that the problem is not consistent – sometimes the audio does get recoreded properly…

rental VTR’s get very beat up all the time. PLEASE simply put up bars and tone from your FCP system – output into your VTR, and put the VTR manually into an insert edit from the front control panel. It’s easy. You will tell in 2 seconds if the VTR has a problem.

I had a similar problem to you once, and it was due to an unstable black reference between the K-Box and a Digi Beta VTR. Make sure that both machines have a common black reference, and that the control tab is checked to Ext Ref, and not video in.
