The DSR45 does not have flying erase heads, so it cannot do an insert or assemble edit (the same applies to the Panasonic AJ-HD1200A, and Sony
HDW-S280). Walter I believe has successfully done a “pseudo” assemble edit using the Firewire interface, and not going thru the Video card.Bob Zelin

I hate Apple’s software RAID 1 solution. Here is why –
1) with a 2 drive SATA RAID 1, you lose half of your disk performance. Using AJA Kona System Test, a 128mb/sec RAID 0 array, goes down to about 68mb/sec at RAID 1. Which means that you aint’ doing 10 bit uncompressed SDI with a RAID 1.
AND the REAL reason I hate RAID 1 with Apple –
2) I don’t always get to use Firmtek SATA host cards, and sometimes I have to use the Sonnet Tempo X 8 port. You have heard me bitch about these in the past, becuase of their poor eSATA connectors. (The E4P seems better). Anyway, if you use the Sonnet 8 port, and do a RAID 1, and someone goes behind the computer to plug in a FW drive, and brushes to firmly on the eSATA cables, it will temporary “disconnect” the RAID drive array, making the Apple think that the RAID has failed (even if it is only for a brief moment). Then, Apple Disk Utility reports RAID FAILED. They you have to go back in and retore the RAID, which TAKES 24 HOURS on two lousy 500 gig drives. And of course, there is nothing wrong with the drives, just one got disconnected for a second. I have found that it is easier to dump your material off on FW800 drive from the RAID 1, delete and recreate the raid 1, and then drag the media back onto the SATA RAID drives. The process takes a few hours, not 24 hours.
SO NO, I am not a big Apple RAID 1 fan.

I assume that you have the latest MAC OS, and the latest FCP (and that you are not on FCP 4.5 with OS-X 10.3.9, etc.). If you are, and still having these problems, I urge you to trash your FCP preferences, and see if your problems go away.
With that said, FCP and I/O DO hang up once in a while. But nowhere like you are describing (2-3 times a week.). With that said, when I get a call from a customer that says “I’ve lost deck control”, etc. after I confirm that the VTR is in remote, I say “turn off the I/O, turn it back on, and reboot your computer” – and the problem is usually gone.
AND with that said, I have AVID Adrenaline clients on HP PC’s, that leave their computers on 24 hours a day, and they hang up also. (Didn’t your CMX and Grass Valley linear controllers hang up too, back in the day ? ).

Sorry Ethan, but I just went thru an install with an educational version of FCP, and the client was screaming that they could not see any of the easy setups, and I had them install them over and over and over again, thinking “what the hell could they be doing wrong” – when they did not have a full release of FCP. I am not in front of your system, and I have no idea of what you do, and do not have.
I will always try to be helpful to you and everyone else, but I will always be a smart ass.

it’s not just the joys of analog video, you MUST use a reference (sync) signal for SDI and HD-SDI as well. And when you use odd frame rates (like 23.98), you must use a Tri Level sync generator. Blackmagic will soon release the Multibridge Studio, which will offer Color Black Sync and Tri Level Sync outputs as part of the product.

At this point, (since you won’t take my advice right away), I ask you to pull out your ATTO SCSI card, forget the HUGE array, stick your firewire card back into slot 3 or 4, hook up your Lacie drive, and try it again, this time digitizing to your Lacie or G-Tech drive. Does it work now ????
If it DOES work, send your HUGE array back to HUGE for Firmware updating. If it does not work, PLEASE hire someone to come in and help you, because you are doing something wrong that is just operational (like not selecting the correct drive to record onto).Bob Zelin

Well here is one for you (maybe two for you) –
1) did you LOAD the AJA drivers for this, or did you just plug in the card, and assume that it was going to show up ? (you can download the drivers from the AJA website).
2) The Educational release of FCP will NOT work with the AJA drivers. You can load the AJA drivers all day long, and they will not show up if you have the educational version of FCP.

I foolishly assumed that you were going to get the Firmtek Seritek PCMCIA card, not the Granite Digital card. The Firmtek will work for your application. The Barefeats website is where I get all my info from.
