I completely disagree with you Steve – but I guess you are spending someone elses money. The AJA HD10AVA is a SUPPORTED product by AJA, and if you look at the Panasonic P2 flyer (and others), you will see pictures of the AJA HD10A, and HD10AVA in their flyers as recommended devices. I was at an Apple XSan meeting last night, and Apple was using an AJA HD10A.

The AJA HD10AVA is a plug and play device – no menus, and GREAT SUPPORT if there is something wrong (which there never is), AND ITS CHEAPER. The only thing you don’t get is RS422 control. The Addenda RS-4L works perfectly and is only $148. And it requires no software – also plug and play. If you think that Addenda is some fly by night company, this is the SAME COMPANY that supplies AVID with their RS422 controllers with EVERY AVID Adrenaline and AVID Nitris (the RS 2/8 converts RS232 to RS422). AND like AJA, you can get Addenda on the phone for support in 2 seconds.

SO, we get to save money, AND we get great support, and it just works. Now the Miranda has TERRIBLE support, and has menus that need to be setup.

But I guess you must be rich, or spending someone elses money, or have lots of time on your hands.

what a great question – the AJA HD10AVA embeddes the analog audio into the HD-SDI stream, so it comes in thru one video cable !!!!! EASY EASY EASY .

I have been doing this for a long time, and your request is pretty ususual. Most people use component and/or component for analog video, and S-video is usually used for very few items (like an occational S-VHS VCR). There is no way to have both at the same time with the AJA or Blackmagic or AVID product. Y/C is pretty much over !

Kona LH or LHe, but if you want to use the Kona 2 or 3, get the AJA HD10AVA along with it to turn the HDRM25 into a HD-SDI signal.

For VTR control, I would use the Addenda RS-4/L instead of firewire control.

just for now, pull your FW card. Open the AJA Pro I/O control panel, and pass video thru your I/O – just sit there with coffee and watch it – any shifts? This type of intermittent can drive you crazy.

Also, in the control panel under control, set the I/O to FREE RUN (no reference), and see if the shifting goes away.

What brand of black gen do you have (I hope it’s not an ESE).

repair permissions, trash your preferences (all of them), uninstall and reinistall the AJA I/O drivers.

When all of this is done, test your AJA I/O using the AJA Pro I/O control panel instead of FCP, to see if it is working ok. As a matter of fact, before you do any of the software stuff, use the Pro I/O control panel to
test your I/O. I bet the software stuff fixes it.

what you won’t like about FCP and AJA is what every AVID editor doesn’t like about FCP and AJA – you have to LEARN SOMETHING NEW. If you are on Nitris, you probably were a DS guy, and may not have even known the Media Composer interface. When you first sit with FCP, you will say “this sucks !”. But stick with it – you will see what we all have learned.

I am responding to this on 6/11, so you may have already resolved this issue, but you can’t hook up a 29.97 black reference signal to a VTR that you want to operate at 23.98. You need a TRI LEVEL SYNC GENERATOR, so that both the Kona and the VTR operate at 23.98. These units start at about $3000 – from Evertz, Astro, Ensemble, Leader, Tektronix, Sigma, and others.

may I suggest that you plug the Dell 24″ directly into your MAC, to make sure the monitor is working. The Dell 2405 can be used as a standard MAC monitor with the DVI connection – there are a million buttons on the Dell, and if you have the wrong input selected (for RGB or S Video instead of DVI), you won’t get a picture. You have to first make sure that your Dell monitor is working, and selected to the DVI input.

Once you prove to your self that you have a working monitor, take the SDI out of the Decklink card, go into the HD Link, and simply feed internal color bars from FCP into your sequence window – make sure that ALL FRAMES are selected in VIEW (not OFF), and now you should see an image.
