decklink pro to HDlink to dell 24″, no picture
Posted by Kevin Kennedy on June 10, 2006 at 3:29 pmHi All!
First time posting here so please excuse if it is obvious to you all. I have a dual 2.7 G5, I shoot in HDV and for monitoring the footage I purchased the Decklink pro card and HDlink. Installed the card, software, hooked up the HDlink to my dell 24″ lcd and nothing is happening. I opened up FCP and all the codec selections for blackmagic are there, which should I use for monitoring HDV? More importantly, why no image at all? I used the SDI mon out cable connection to the HDlink.
I’ve repaired permissions, tried to set the display up in my system preferences, selected dual monitor in FCP set up.
Nothing shows up on my dell 24″ second display. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

June 10, 2006 at 4:02 pmmay I suggest that you plug the Dell 24″ directly into your MAC, to make sure the monitor is working. The Dell 2405 can be used as a standard MAC monitor with the DVI connection – there are a million buttons on the Dell, and if you have the wrong input selected (for RGB or S Video instead of DVI), you won’t get a picture. You have to first make sure that your Dell monitor is working, and selected to the DVI input.
Once you prove to your self that you have a working monitor, take the SDI out of the Decklink card, go into the HD Link, and simply feed internal color bars from FCP into your sequence window – make sure that ALL FRAMES are selected in VIEW (not OFF), and now you should see an image.

June 10, 2006 at 7:29 pmThe first time I plugged in my HDlink I got nothing. I had to plug in the USB port and update it before it would work.

June 11, 2006 at 2:43 amYes, I have checked out and used the Dell in composet mode and DVI mode without the decklink in the loop and it works fine so that isn’t the problem and I have updated the HDlink and still no picture in FCP or other wise. How can I check the card and see if its functioning?

June 11, 2006 at 4:02 amOk, I have audio through the HDlink but still no video. I have the video set to all frames, the video playback set to HDTV 1080i 25, 8 bit. hz .
Help?
This is a show that I’d already captured using sony fx1 set to HDV and sony firewire. Would that make a difference? Still, I can’t see anything on that second display. In FCP or Motion, or the desktop. Nothing. I’ve updated the latest software for the decklink still nada.

June 11, 2006 at 8:15 amHi Kevin,
Firsly, ensure that FCP is setup properly. Use the easy setup (Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup) and load “Blackmagic HDTV 1080i59.94 – HDV” or “Blackmagic HDTV 1080i50 – HDV”. Create a new sequence and drop your clips into that sequence. This should setup the DeckLink card to play out HDV via FCP.
Next, look at the 2 LEDs beside the USB port on the HDLink. If you have the USB connected, the one on the left of the port should be blinking. If the USB cable is not connected, that light should remain lit. Either way, this shows that the HDLink is receiving power.
Now look at the LED on the right of the USB port. Is it lit? This indicates a valid 4:2:2 signal being received by HDLink. If not, something is wrong.

June 11, 2006 at 4:52 pmThe lights are lit on the HDlink. However after dropping the clips into the new sequence still no video. I’m not getting anything on the second monitor, not even the desktop.

June 11, 2006 at 8:52 pmSo… where do I go from here? In case this makes a difference I’m running system 10.4.6 and FCP 5.0.4 with an ADI Radeon 9600 in it. I feel something is wrong with the Decklink pro card or the HDlink and I have no way of testing either. I ran one of the sdi monitor out video connections into a standard tv monitor via an adapter and got no picture that way but I’m not sure it would show an image that way.
BTW, how warm should the HDlink get? Mine isn’t hot to the touch but it is definitly very warm.

June 12, 2006 at 1:52 pmHeres an update for anyone following this saga. Looks like I have a bad HDlink. I’m sending it back and when I get it hooked up with a new one I’ll come back and tell of the success.

June 13, 2006 at 11:33 amJust little stupid question. Is your card Decklink Pro or Decklink HD Pro? Decklink Pro is SD only.
