8 channel optical is usually refered to as ADAT, which was developed by Alesis for their old 8 track recorders that used VHS format. The ADAT optical format is used by AVID, and AJA as well. Tascam sells ADAT to TDIF interfaces. Alesis sells ADAT to AES/EBU interfaces.

You should get the new Firmtek SATA card, and two SATA drives (Hitachi or Seagate) in the firmtek 2 bay enclosure. 2 SATA drives striped together RAID 0 will give you over 120mb/sec, – more than enough to do anything except uncompressed hD.

honestly, I just don’t have the experience with the MAC Book Pro, so I can’t give you first hand accounts of what does and does not work. My comments are based on G4’s and G5’s. It makes no sense to me as well that you “can” capture from your DVD, but not your Beta VTR. The computer is unaware of what source you are capturing – only the data rate.

the dropped frames is because of your drive (which is probably full). A Firewire 800 drive CANNOT do uncompressed 10 bit. It can (barely) do 8 bit uncompressed and DVCPro50 (and DVCProHD). This has got nothing to do with your Beta VTR, or any other source. If it was working at one time – then God bless you – it ain’t consistant.
I have NO IDEA of how the Mac Book Pro – which does not support FW800 natively – even handles FW800. Try the new Firmtek SATA card that just came out.

please tell me how you are referencing your equipment. Do you have a common black generator on your AJA Kona Reference In and your VTR Ref Video In ? Exactly what make and model black generator is it ?

both of you are clearly showing why professional waveform monitors exist. Believe me, I am not saying “there is NO WAY that the Blackmagic card has a problem” – it very well may have a problem – but without proper test equipment – specifically designed to identify these issues – it will be very difficult to pin down the problem. I also understand how insanely expensive component and digital waveform monitors are (almost as much as the entire edit system) – but it’s hard to “point the finger” without hard facts. In the example I gave (about the green tint in the Sony monitors) – it was hard for me to believe that almost all the PVM series had been misaligned, and before I had the audacity to call Sony and complain (of which they didn’t care anyway) – I gathered as many facts as possible. I had the luxury of having access to the proper scope to do this.

both the Dell and Apple screens are made by LG, not Phillips. The Dell is fantastic, and the Dell has analog HD inputs on the side of the monitor (RCA jacks), so you can take the output of an HD device (like a HDV VTR) and stick it directly into the Dell – can’t do that with the Apple.
I have never seen this “blue/green” noise in the Dell.

no – but you can use DVCProHD, which looks FANTASTIC, and is compatible with all FCP based products. You are NOT going to be able to cross convert media between any AVID product and any FCP hardware product.
