  • Capture from DA-98 via optical?

Posted by Steve Covello on June 8, 2006 at 7:18 pm

Anyone have success capturing from DA-98 via optical? I know the IO device is setup for ADAT, but all my source tapes are DA-88 recordings. I figure I could get the DA-98 with the optical option, but I don’t know if the data format is the same as the Alessis product or whether it is an industry standard.

    thx – Steve

    It’s the ADAT industry standard.

Thanks for the reply Bob, but I’m not sure what you mean in your reply. Do you mean that it is Alessis’ standard or the industry’s [AES]standard? How could it be both if Alessis is not “the industry” per se given that there are other products like DA-88?

    Thx – Steve

8 channel optical is usually refered to as ADAT, which was developed by Alesis for their old 8 track recorders that used VHS format. The ADAT optical format is used by AVID, and AJA as well. Tascam sells ADAT to TDIF interfaces. Alesis sells ADAT to AES/EBU interfaces.

I’m wondering if this is too late for ya, but with a DA98- you’re set to go. Just use the AES outs from the 98 into the AES Ins on the IO. With a DA88, you’d need the Tascam IF-AE8 convertor to convert TDIF to AES.
