the XLR output is a professional level output – it is 14dB higher than a consumer RCA output. This is why I always tell everyone to get a MIXER, so you can adjust your levels. IF you want to see a set of powered speakers blow up real fast, directly plug the output of the BMD into the powered speakers without a mixer or attenuator in between. This difference in levels (-10 to +4dB, or consumer to professional levels) has been this way long before computer editing (and I mean even linear editing) was invented.

use slot 3. There is an expansion slot utiility that lets you select the number of “lanes” per slot (it’s dynamic, and not fixed like the Quad) – and I am not that familiar with how to do it, so for now, use slot 3, which is safe for the Kona card, no matter what.

I hope that someone from AJA responds to this. I have not seen this – but I can assure you that NVidia has a control panel that can create this problem with their “overlay” in the AVID systems, if it is not set correctly. Now I know that the AJA I/O does not rely on the
AGP graphics card to display it’s video signal, but I don’t know what the Mac Pro might be doing – so I hope there is a response to this promptly.Bob Zelin

yes – work at 59.94 (sorry about that) –
and you need about 220mb/sec to record uncompressed HD (about 128mb/sec to record DVCPro – this are real numbers, not theoretical from some spec sheet). You aint’ gonna get 220mb/sec from a single drive – not in the next 5 years – you must stripe multiple drives together (like 10 SATA drives, or a loaded Apple XServe RAID with 14 drives, or a nice HUGE array with 10 drives, like the U320RX).

If DNxHD145 is an off line format, and Unity ISIS uses DNx145 exclusively for shared storage, and that is what CBS network has standardized to, then I guess when we watch CBS network, we are watching off line resolutions (being even further compressed by our local

go to your Kona control panel, and make sure that the reference is in Free Run or Ref Video (or ext ref – I forgot what they called it), but NOT Video IN.

The panasonic VTR will do the 2:3 pulldown for you, and spit out the video at 59.94, even if you shot at 23.98. If you are going to finish for TV, and not for feature film release, I see no reason to work at 23.98. Let the VTR do it’s thing, and convert to 59.94, and enter your project into your FCP Kona 2 system at 59.94, and you will have a very easy time working, viewing, and making release dubs for TV release.

DVCProHD codec takes up as little space as DNxHD. If you are using an AJA or Blackmagic card, choose DVCProHD, and you will have the same results, and the same quality.

without a scope, I can’t give you an honest answer, but much SD footage has setup (black levels) at 7.5 IRE, and that same material (or all SDI and HD-SDI footage) has black set for 0 IRE (no setup level) – so the SAME material looks DARKER when you observe it via a SDI or HD-SDI path. This has tormented people long before the AVID was invented.
