you need an AJA I/O, not a Kona LHe, if your requirements are S-Video and SD component. You obviously are not familiar with any of this equipment, and if you think that you can use these forums to save a couple of bucks, instead of contacting a professional VAR reseller like ProMax to help you, then you are fooling yourself. I don’t know what city you are in, but there are plenty of companies out there that can help you put a complete system together that will work. If you had read any of the recent posts on this forum, you would have seen the detailed discussions about RAM limitations in the new MAC Pro computers- but I guess you did’nt read any of that, and are just asking your questions. So call a professional reseller – not a box house – and get a proper working system. Again, get the AJA I/O- it’s what you need. Worry about HD later.Bob Zelin

let me assure you of one thing. The day your equipment comes in, you will suffer. We ALL suffer. I have been doing this for 30 years, and today, I have to deal with the new Sony XDCam HD, and I am suffering. NOTHING just plugs in and works. You screw with it for a while, you read, you study, you sweat, and you getting working. Then, you are an expert.You have been given great advice – the AJA HD10A or HD10AVA does a wonderful “plug and play” job of converting analog Y Pb Pr HD signals into HD-SDI for the Kona 2 or Kona 3. But guess what – there are LOTS of menus in all the HDV VTR’s, and you HAVE TO GET USED TO USING THEM. This is yet another Sony VTR that takes time to get used to because of all the menus, and it’s own ability to downconvert from HD to SD.
Suffering is part of being an editor – it always has, and as long as new technology keeps coming out (and it sure does) – we will all continue to suffer.
I have also heard of the HDV VTR with HD-SDI output and RS422 coming out (there are no press releases on this VTR as of 9/21/06) – but if it was my money, I would wait too.
You want some detailed device – download the HDV VTR manual, and read it, and get ready for things not to work.

This is amazing, and typical AJA. This is why I go crazy when people sometimes say “yea, nothing is new” (like when they introduced the internal Frame Sync for free on the I/O, or cross convert on the Kona 3). AJA could have CHARGED US for this fantastic feature, that you would pay Videotek A LOT OF MONEY FOR. But its FREE. AMAZING.

don’t you want to monitor your VTR’s, in addition to your Kona ? I am always amazed how people say “oh, yea, I am doing an edit to tape right now” – and then an hour later, they realize that they never recorded any audio on the tape. The 16 channel board is so you can not only monitor your Kona, but your Digi Beta, Beta, VHS, DVD-R, and every other damn thing in your room, including your MAC G5 audio out.

Mike Johnson’s system is the typical example of an excellent second system, and it is wonderful that you can put the additional dual internal SATA drives in the Mac Pro, without the need for an additional controller card. I am sure he will make a lot of money with this new system.

Every edit system in the world, from back in the old linear days, thru AVID, and now into FCP and Premier, has an audio mixer on it. This is the way it is done, and this is the way that you will do it. You own a mixer, you will use it. If you dont’ want to use a mixer, get an audio attenuator, like the Mackie BIG KNOB, which can act like a little volume control for you, and no mixer. And if you want to spend no money, you can look for the ROLLS audio attenuator, which has two little knobs on it, and will kind of work – I believe it’s about 40 bucks, but you can get a small Behringer mixer for a few bucks more than this.However, if you insist on being a baby, and just want what you want (even though you own a mixer), and just can’t understand why it takes EQUIPMENT to make a living in the editing business, please post your address, and I will be happy to fly to your location and strangle you.

shove the AJA Kona 3 analog outputs, and your MAC G5 audio out, into a small mixer, and adjust all your levels, and your monitor volume to your BX-5 speakers via the small mixer.

DVCPro50 is an excellent SD codec. DVCProHD is not a SD codec – it is for HD. It will work with one SATA drive, but you will not get reliable playback for a long show with effects, titles, etc. You need TWO SATA drives stripped RAID 0 for long term reliable playback. Lots of stuff works – but there is a big difference between working, and working reliably.
Hey, you don’t even need a second internal drive- you could use your boot drive – but who in their right minds would do this ? Internal drives are teriffic for keeping graphics files, audio, but real video projects need at least 2 SATA drives RAID 0 to work well.
I think that Blackmagic once had a press release that they had DVCPro HD playing back on an iPod (I seem to recall, I could be wrong here)- just becuase it marginally works does not mean that you should run your business this way.
