KONA LHe crash Mac pro on startup.
Posted by Mike Johnson on September 19, 2006 at 11:04 amI got a Mac Pro 2.66 ghz out of the box, updated with lastest OS X with updates.
Final Cut Pro 5.1.1 installed.KONA LHe with breakout box.
Kona Software version 3 (Version 3, Release Date 8/29/2006, TAR archive)
I just moved over the card this morning from my G5 quad, it been working fine there.
Now the whole system freeze on startup.
What have I missed?
Should it be installed in some specific slot?Bart Harrison replied 19 years, 8 months ago 6 Members · 11 Replies -

September 19, 2006 at 12:19 pmuse slot 3. There is an expansion slot utiility that lets you select the number of “lanes” per slot (it’s dynamic, and not fixed like the Quad) – and I am not that familiar with how to do it, so for now, use slot 3, which is safe for the Kona card, no matter what.

Can this be QT 7.1.3 related or something?

Remove the card
Restart

Choose #2 and saveshut down and reinstall the Kona card

September 19, 2006 at 2:02 pmMike,
How much RAM do you have in the system ? Do you have a SCSI of Fibre Channel card in the system. I’m putting together a 3.0 MacPro with LHe/Celerity and it’s giving me fits. It’ll start but locks up hard under a load. The only way it’s stable is to reduce the RAM to 1GB (the recommended 2GB didn’t do the trick).
Oh the wonders of new technology !!

September 19, 2006 at 2:19 pmTwo 512MB strips of RAM ? Have you tried reseating all the cards including the RAM risers ? Have you tried zapping the PRAM (cmd-option-P-R) ?

September 19, 2006 at 4:56 pmthe solution was what Gary suggested.
I set the PCI expansion slot utility to #2.
Then rebooted and it boosted the slot from x4 to x8 times, another restart and it was a go.

September 19, 2006 at 6:31 pmHi,
In the hopes to eliminate this potential configuration issue for others as they migrate to the new Mac Pro, the information Gary provided is in the READ-ME of our 3.0 driver, as follows:
PCIe Slot Configuration Notes for Mac Pro Computers
The default Apple factory configuration of PCIe slots in a Mac Pro has slot 4 set as a x4 lane, slot 3 as a x4 lane, slot 2 as a x1 lane and slot 1 as a x16 lane. For proper operation, place the KONA card in slot 3 and your HBA card (RAID controller) in slot 4 of the Mac Pro machines.
For a detailed explanation on how slots can be configured in a Mac Pro, users should visit the following Apple website and its associated links:
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtech_PCI/Articles/ pci_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003937-DontLinkElementID_3
If you are unsure of the slot configuration as used in your machine, it can be determined by using the The Expansion Slot Utility, found in the following directory location on your Mac Pro: /System/Library/CoreServices. Occasionally, users may purchase a Mac Pro and find that the slots are not configured to the standard factory defaults; checking the configuration with the Expansion Slot Utility allows you to verify the setting is as desired (sample screenshot contained in Release Notes).
Thank you,

September 20, 2006 at 12:14 pmHi Bart,
i don’t know if you do recall but i had a simillar problem
2 weeks ago, Atto hasn’t fixed their drivers yet..i had better luck with the Apple 2 GB card, granted not the same bandwith but it was stable.
Might want to give it a go in the meantime.
