are you really going to try to convince him to go with a Command Soft Fibre Jet system with Infortrend drive storage ? This is 2014 remember. You guys should pick up some new lines. I am sure that most of the people you see promoting themselves here on Creative Cow would be more than happy to make you a dealer, and you could offer more modern solutions to your customers – a little more current than what Rorke Data was pitching 10 years ago.Bob Zelin

Dustin’s post is a very important post. It costs a LOT OF MONEY to build anything. Forget the ATEM – think about audio for a minute. You buy a nice audio board – I am not talking about a big Digico, or Yamaha – I mean a little Behringer or Mackie mixer for $500, with lots of inputs and outputs. By the time you buy all the microphones, cables, and connectors to get this wired up, all of this costs a LOT more than the audio mixer.
Same with video. Just because Blackmagic gives you a great deal for $999 for the ATEM, you still need cameras, tripods, lenses, intercom system, audio, a recording device, a streaming device, SSD’s or hard drives for your recording device, etc. People think that it’s $1000 for the ATEM, so the entire thing should not cost more than $2000 – well, THEY ARE WRONG. As Dustin has learned, all this stuff costs a lot of money.
This is an important lesson. Blackmagic makes the new Studio Camera, which is an amazing value for $1995. This does not mean that you have a working camera for $1995. The lens alone is dramatically more than this. Now add batteries, charger, tripod, legs, mount, carrying cases – wow, it sure costs more than 2 grand for this camera – now want to use this in a studio configuration – multiply this by 3 or 4 – and that is just for the cameras. Now you still need all your audio, intercom, switcher, etc. YES, it’s a lot of money.
And for people saying “see, you should have bought the Tricaster” – its the same “hidden” expense.
If your cameras are HDMI or analog component only, yes, you will need converters for every camera. This applies for any switcher.

great article. Everyone who is established thinks that anything new sucks. Quantel Paintbox artists thought that Adobe Photoshop was a joke. I knew engineers at NBC NY that called AutoCAD “Autotoy”.
Film editors (the old ones that cut film) thought that linear video editing was for kids, and not real editing. And of course, Linear CMX Editors thought that the AVID was a joke. Same applied to FCP (because AVID was the way that professionals edited). And I laugh seeing the OLD 30 year olds who think that FCP 7 is the only thing, and Premiere is just junk.It’s just interesting that when you are young, you are open to new ideas, and open to learning new things. And then once you “grow up” and start to make a name for yourself, and have responsibilities (like a wife, kids, a house, a car), all of a sudden, none of this stuff is cool anymore, and you just want to do your job (because you are so much better than that 24 year old), and be left alone. And no matter what comes out (camera, recording device, computer, editing or graphics software) – IT SUCKS because you are not an expert on it, and you can do the “same thing” with your old piece of junk, and after all, none of “your” clients are asking for that new thing (who needs HD video !).
I think that life is wonderful when new things are developed – I don’t care if it’s our business or any other business. But most “older” people just hate it – be it music, art, technology, sports, etc. They just want to be left alone. I like to torment those people.

so exactly what is your question ? Is PreRoll Post a wonderful product ? YES IT IS. Is it worth buying, instead of the free HP StorOpen ? YES IT IS. Is it better than BRU ? That is a stupid question – they are different products. Both are wonderful.Do I love the MLogic MTape – yes I do.

both Proavio and Sonnet make SAS expander boxes. Both are excellent. Don’t compare apples to oranges. If you do some simple research you will see that Proavio makes a 12g SAS expander product. And so do plenty of other companies shown here on Creative Cow.

Hi –
interesting you should say the XS708E. I have seen two XS708E, including one yesterday, that would choke everyone’s bandwidth when more than one client was pulling. I have used XS708E and XS712T without issue since there release, but there have been a couple of “bad” XS708E. I was able to prove this by bypassing the switch, and plugging two clients into each of the two 10G ports, and getting everything to work normally. Put the switch in line – bang ! – bandwidth issues. Never an issue with the XS712T, however.So my suggestion is (assuming you have a 2 port 10G card in your Thecus), is try to try direct connect (bypass the switch) and use a utility like AJA System Test or LAN Speed Test to see your bandwidth with and without the XS708E. In my situation, there was never an issue until a second client was connected. Good thing I had the second 10G port on the server.
SO – what is Netgears suggestion –
1) flash the firmware to V1.00.12, and reset the switch. Of course, you need the ProSafe Plus Configuration Utility to do this.
I am going to do this with my problem client on Monday.Bob Zelin
