Lacie does not make drives. They make boxes, and stick drives in them. You are looking at marketing “look, the Apple store recommends this brand”, but in real life, there are only two brands of drives – Seagate and Western Digital. Even Hitachi (now called HGST) is really Western Digital. Samsung is Seagate. Same applies to Maxtor. I think (I could be wrong) that Toshiba is Western Digital with a sticker from Toshiba on it.So all drives suck. If you had Lacie’s for years that did not fail, you are very very very lucky, and should play the lottery more. You are facing what everyone faces – spinning drives cannot be trusted. You pick a company that you have good faith in, that has good support. Every drive you see advertised on Creative Cow has the actual insides (the drive itself) made by WD or Seagate (or one of their sub companies). Choose a brand that you see advertised on Creative Cow. These are all good companies.

go to https://www.attotech.com
download the V3.50 driver for your R680 and the NEW firmware (aug 2014). Flash the card with your drives dismounted. Do it on both systems.You will be fine.

at the risk of getting throw off Creative Cow, I will answer your question in a way that you will not like.There are two well known companies that offer wonderful ZFS solutions –

both owners of these companies are very active on Creative Cow, and if you simply purchase their systems, you will have a wonderful working ZFS Shared Storage system.
Creative Cow is not an engineering forum. No one is going to tell you how to “build it yourself” on this forum, so you can save ALL THAT MONEY that those other guys charge. This is not https://www.spiceworks.com, and even on there, they won’t tell you all the secrets to get things to work. If you want a ZFS shared storage environment, buy a Small Tree or LumaForge shared storage system, and you will have a working system with wonderful support. If you want to build it yourself, you will not get your answers here.

My usual comment. No matter what is said about the Drobo, there is one thing that is very obvious to me, that is the #1 priority to most users. “What is the least expensive product I can buy”. This is why AVID for years insisted on selling their own storage.
So instead of picking QNAP, Netgear ReadyNAS, Thecus, Synology, or one of the countless products that you see advertise here on Creative Cow, or one of the products that is talked about constantly on Creative Cow, you choose the one product that will not work – why – because is was such a good price compared to anything else.
You could pick any product that you see from any advertiser on Creative Cow, and you would have a working system right now. But your only comment (or your bosses only comment) will be “but it cost so much more than the Drobo”.
Well, now you see what happens. There are no bad products advertised on Creative Cow. Unfortunately, you bought one.

both are great companies. I use both, depending on client demands. PreRoll Post does NOT support tape libraries (only single tapes), so if you need library function, it’s a no brainer – you choose Tolis BRU.
