Bill, most of the time I agree with your pro-X bias, but this is just too fan boy, even for me. You cannot make your argument work in this situation. The workarounds mentioned can in no way be interpreted as a “good or better way, just different”. One clutters up your database, the other is barely good enough to call it a workaround. And easy to see situations where it would be unworkable. This is simply a function X does not have. Like, Send to Motion.

Dunno, it’s working…. sort of… here. Can’t say I’ve a yardstick by which to judge, as I rarely did exactly what you’re saying. But when I select a clip, hit spacebar, it plays…. after an almost :02 delay! Sad. However, if I scrub/mouse over the clip & hit spacebar, it plays instantly. Happy. (This is my usual method in List view.)

In thumbnail mode, using the next edit command, which in the Browser jumps to the beginning of the next clip, and hit spacebar, the clip plays instantly. Huh. Seems like this should be the same “performance functionality” as List view. That is, there’s not a preceding “scrub” to buffer video for RT playback.

Meh.

Either creating compounds ad nasuem or scrubbing madly like a deckhand in the scuppers is hardly a slick way to compare shots. (No offense at all to Bill or Bret, as their suggestions are valid, I use them too.) But the devs should’ve addressed this long ago.

Don’t get me wrong, I use X exclusively. Doesn’t mean all its’ design is good. Like this.

Used the ACE, but with a keyboard mostly. It had some pretty neat stuff you could do with nested edits and other advanced things. And I used to embed signal system commands to D2 VTR’s in edits. Hex code. lol. But it was always derided by CMX guys. Which I edited on after before & after the ACE.

Thanks for pointing that out. I’ve always CC’d in the Angle editor, but lots of times being able to change CC during edit progression will be very handy. Have you changed CC to same angle as you edit, and it updates, without changing prior edit CC?

Right now I’m editing ten greenscreen projects, 15 minutes each, multicam. I let X create the mults, then go into Angle editor, Group each angle, go into each Group, and add keys, background, etc. Some angles have “bottom” background elements (eg, a 3rd or 4th layer) that doesn’t get added until back in the main timeline, and that works great.

Now if only X would handle the invoicing…. 😀

I recently did a Varicam35 project, and started it off in PPro before going back to FCPX. But I noticed that PPro saw those as separate clips as well.

I keep a “Template” Library on all my systems, with some Smart collections that I drag/copy into new Libraries:

Timelines. aka projects. BUT, the Smart Collection filters out any with the name “Snapshot”. I mostly use project snapshots as edit “temp backups” as I progress down different rabbit holes. Generally though, I don’t want to see ’em mixed in with the rest of the Timelines (ahem, Projects).
Comps. Grouped clips. I’m an old-school AE person, so they’re called Comps, dammit.
Audio.
Stills.
Multicam.

For larger projects, I’ll use Smarts to do things like; “show me broll from this location”. (keywords = broll, location_name). Or anything else I might need. I find my “level of keyword detail” increases on larger projects, to allow for more granular searches as it progresses. On these projects, I try to keep in front of adding basic keywords (“broll”, “on cam”, “interview”, “steadicam”, “aerial”) as I ingest. By having enough to do a top-level clip separation, it makes it faster to add more detailed keywords later on, if desired. Sometimes adding a camera name to a Smart collection helps get the result. Etc.

I don’t know if I’m spending more or less time organizing, but I can confidently say I’m spending LESS time looking for shots than in Legacy.
