Couple that setup with a modded version of the Nintendo Wii controllers and we’re off!!!

I can’t really say I’m excited by the new lineup of MacBooks and MacBooks Pro. Issues:

    1) No expansion slot in MacBook; only one slot in MacBook Pro.
    2) Expansion slot in MacBook Pro WILL NOT natively accept Panasonic P2 cards.
    3) No FW800 in the 15-inch (…IMHO, the 17-inch is just unwieldly).

Don’t get me wrong, these machines look like they’ll pack one heck of a wallop. But for +$2k/$3k, not having “the little things” matters quite a bit.

    p.s. “MacBooks Pro”…kinda like “Attorneys General”…right?

    That hit the spot!

Funny thing, I just listened to Martin on the Cow Podcast last night…he’s everywhere!

    Thanks.

Dale, I’ve done exactly what you are suggesting and it worked perfectly fine:

    1) Shot Super 16mm
    2) Telecine to HDCam
    3) Digitized from HD-SDI of JH3 via Blackmagic Decklink HD set to capture DVCProHD codec
    4) Edit in FCP 5
    5) Used Media Manager to create new uncompressed HD sequence
    6) Onlined from HD-SDI of JH3 via Blackmagic Decklink HD set to capture at 10-bit

    voila.

    My $0.02:

    1) Shoot film
    2) Best light transfer to HDCAM SR – this keeps a greater range from your 16MM original than would transfering to DVCProHD
    3) Digitize from HDCAM SR deck with Kona/Blackmagic, and capture using the DVCProHD codec – this allows to offline at reasonable data rates, yet keep the “WOW Factor” of showing your edit in high-definition
    4) Online from your HDCAM SR source fully uncompressed 10-bit – doing your color-correction with a greater range to begin with and uncompressed will enhance the image to the highest degree

…this road is a tad more expensive (HDCAM SR deck rental and tapes), BUT the result IMHO is worth it.

  • In short, yes!!!

Unless there is an absolutely compelling feature that you need in 5, finish in your current setup and upgrade later.

A lot of times I capture 1080p/23.98 to OfflineRT/23.98 using the Decklink HD, move it to my PowerBook, cut, then online back on the G5. The irony of editing HD on a little laptop makes me giggle.

Storage and data rate only matter in relation to what gear you have.

  • Give these a shot:

    1) View>Video Playback – make sure you have the proper selection
    2) View>External Video>All Frames
    3) View>Refresh A/V Devices
    4) Try different zoom settings in the CANVAS window
    5) Try turning off OVERLAY in the CANVAS window
    6) Try selecting IMAGE rather than IMAGE+WIREFRAME in the CANVAS window

    Good luck.

  • Three weeks ago, I bought a Decklink HD card for $595 and now there’s a new pricing scheme…

    HELLO!!! $595 FOR UNCOMPRESSED 1080i!!!

The card paid for itself in one billable hour. Instead of buying a multibridge for it, I’ll just get a 4:4:4 Pro card and SAVE $600.

I love you, BM…thanks to you and your gear, I’m going to spend three months in Brazil next year…you make me very, very happy 😉
