I have a friend who just put together a HD rig with the Decklink/BM HD card (the $595 one).

He has a feature shot on HDCAM (not SR) and wants to capture via a JH3 to DVC PRO HD – edit and preview in DVC PRO HD, and when he’s happy with the project – take the edl, re-capture finish it uncompressed.

He’s being told this can’t be done.

    True or false?

Any timecode issues or is it fairly simple?

Best thing should be, capture the off-line in dv via the dv board of the J3, do the off-line, than recapture in Hd with the J3. This what I do for all the HD feature I do, and it work perfectly. (I work with the same decklink HD card as you mention).

    Ciao !

Dale, I’ve done exactly what you are suggesting and it worked perfectly fine:

    1) Shot Super 16mm
    2) Telecine to HDCam
    3) Digitized from HD-SDI of JH3 via Blackmagic Decklink HD set to capture DVCProHD codec
    4) Edit in FCP 5
    5) Used Media Manager to create new uncompressed HD sequence
    6) Onlined from HD-SDI of JH3 via Blackmagic Decklink HD set to capture at 10-bit

    voila.

    Yes, but…

I’d much prefer to edit and preview in DVC PRO HD. I know it can be done in DV, but why look at DV when you can look at DVC PRO HD? And…IF you could cut in DVCPRO HD, you can preview it off a PowerBook and right into an HD projector. And you can edit it on HD, which is nice.

    So? Can it be done?

    EXCELLENT!

Thanks for good news! My friend will be very happy. (Assuming he hasn’t already returned his BM card for a Kona 2).

No point capturing 10bit off HDCam (its only 8bit format)
