January 17, 2006 at 4:05 am in reply to: What’s the go with The mac desktop Preview and the LHe ?Hi
I have a Kona LH on a g5
i have the same problem trying to get a SD desktop on my system. (NTSC 720×486)
Apparently, because the kona LH is a HD card (with downconversion for SD)
the g5 only sees it as an HD Display card, hence those 2 choices in your
Display Sys Pref, and the downconverted output instead of native.Which version of photoshop? I think CS2 has a “video output” that lets you pipe your comp out the LH card (or firewire) at SD resolution. go to the adobe site to check
Also, a program by Synthetic Aperture called Echo fire will take what ever is in your clipboard and run it out the card.
WE have not gotten to the point where its an issue Yet…however I thin we will go for the Photoshop Upgrade
I would hope kona would be looking at this as well, cuz not every app has a video out, and a Standard Def desktop preview is kinda crucial
hope this helps

Hey
I love this! you can really tell whats lacking in a systme when you look at the feature lists people want to see!
here is my 2 cents:
add one more line to the motion tab and just call it “speed control” . sometimes you dont care where the shot ends, just as long as its slow or fast
Have a “Find Unused shot” function, so that you can do a search for shots or portions of shots that you have not cut in. This is different than unused media, as thats more of a housekeeping function. Find Unused shots is an editorial function based on the timecode of shots in your sequences. BITD we would figure out waht we havent used by going through the film bin and pulling out the odds and ends left over, load em on the moviola, and see whats what. Nowadays i have to do this from memory (did we use that? how bout that?)
and i want a visual timecode window on my sequence as i play it and on my NTSC monitor as well

thanx brad
thats whati thought
oh well,ill just be prudent!

thanx mark
unfortunately, i have no budget in this case to buy software. its really more for my convenience.
i think the program may not work, as the NLE i am coming from never really
got “project compatible” with the other discreet products, and was discontinued years ago (yet it is still used here and elsewhere)
I beleive that before the product was dropped, the best i could do was transfer sequences from edit to smoke, not whole projects
thanx again
If i figure a way to do it, ill post it here

thanx!i am sure the the rendering issues are merely because the project i am in now was not set up properly
as for EDLs, i had read elsewhere that FCP is finnicky about what edls to accept
thanx!

dood! i was hoping i’d get you to chime in here eventually. all we need is palmos and its old home week!
man im intigued by this FCP. it does a bit more than edit in real time, and im sure eventually i’ll get my chops down on the interface. but as to your question:
I have about 5 EDL’s, with a mix of interviews, animation, lower third tga’s and b roll cutaways. I’ll convert the animation out of edit to animation qt,
and the tga’s should import so all i need to do is capture the interviews and b roll. which is probably about 200 clips,i also have a spreadsheet with about 300 to 500 clips (you should have seen it before i narrowed it down, had about 2000!)
so, just to re-iterate, some of the shots on the EDL’s are common ie the same shot appears in more than one EDL, as well as being common to shots in the spreadsheet, overall probably 100-150 shots on the EDLs are also in the spreadsheet. (the edls are final edits, the spreadsheets are outakes and alt versions not used, as well as whats in the EDLS)
the only elements that are JUST in the EDL, as far as originating on tape, are the interviews.
so without delving too deeply into the workings of this whole FCP Master Clip, Sub Clip, Independent Clip thing. I dont know how to save myself from having to recap 150 shots, or more, twice.
soory about long wind, but i wanted to make it clear. I also want to make it clear that advice directly given here would be great, but i would be happy with web links to info as well!
thanx again

i always think that going home early is the best solution 🙂
i have been trying to set the resolution from the system preferences. setting them up to show in the menu bar, as you suggest, is the only thing i have NOT tried (i thought it did not matter. thats waht i get for thinking!)
i will try that next, and as you said, i will have to drag the comp over, but thats fine as long as i can see it at SD res, not HD or HD crop or whatever.
thanx again for your patience and support

yes it does
except i have photoshop cs not cs2
and i did exactly what you said, and i only get a 1280 x 720 desktop out of my kona card
and i guess thats the way it will have to be!
thanx anyway to you all
