    Hey

If you have a tape format that will give you lossless or near lossless storage, such as DVCPROHD for a DVCPROHD Project, there is a way to archive all your non tc media by laying it to tape. you can then re capture it later. Larry Jordan has the info, and the software to do it is cheaper than a tape drive or something

As most my jobs are HDV, i have been laying off to HDV tape.

If nothing else, you can recapture and eyematch

    hope this helps

    Justin

You can transcode via media management. if you are familiar with this part of FCP its pretty straightforward. bascially you tell MM to recompress all your clips to DVCPROHD and make a new project. Search this forum for “transcode” and “media management” and you will find numerous and valuable threads on this

also look up ken stone and or larry jordan on the web, as they have online guides for processes just like what you need

because it is a recompression process, it is less than real time, so leave yourself time. Like overnight. Or a very long lunch

    hope this helps

    Hey

are you sure about Uncompressed NTSC and DV ntsc having the same feild dominance? I could not tell you off the top of my waht its supposed to be, but everytime i go into setup, i see the prompt that sez “all video is yadda yadda first except dv which is doda doda”

soooo i think DV, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and maybe even DVCPROHD NTSC are upper field first?

    Rick

I have been wrestling with a similar issue. I have an edit* system and have been trying to get projecxts migrated over to FCP. Here is waht i have found:

I can generate “almost batch files” out of edit by exporting a text file of the contents of a bin, then capturing that

I have to format my edls so the clip name comes across as a comment or a note, then i can usually relink pretty easily although it is far from automatic.
I have been messig around with an application called CatDV, which can change text files into xml files. By some clever manipulating of the scene and comment info, i can re approximate pretty closely my edit timeline but i am still “de bugging” as i cannot carry over transistions and such

Since you are coming out of an avid, you may be able to use Automatic Duck to make a more robust transfer of your sequences, rather than using EDL’s

and when all is said and done, the current FCP workflow when dealing with EDL’s is to create a bin of clips with names based on the reel numbers, and then you can recapture. Unfortunately FCP names the clips in the order of the events in the EDL so that if you have 5 shots from reel 123, FCP name the clips 1231, 1232, 1233 and so on.

my 2 cents which i hope may help

  • Jeremy:

    Just checked in here!

when i make the media offline, i can change the track settings, but if i reconnect, it goes back to 8 tracks
I guess this means i would have to recapture

    thanx anyway!

    hi

“Now if you’re going to DV or DVCAM and you know your audio is consistently low at the station, then bump your bars and tone up by a few dB”

Actually, its the opposite. To make your prgram seem louder, or at least come across louder, set your tone LOWER on your dv cam master

BTW the guy i look to for definitve audio info is jay rose over at dv.com Not only is he like the original audio production geek, but he was my competition and later a coworker when i started out, so hes got my props

Hey Walter, you a Media 100 guy? geez that was one weird box! but man, could they make 100kB per frame look good!

  • hey gary!

when ya comin back to the twin cities?? saw ya at a demo for fcp 4 at digital pictures a while ago

but other than that…you may be right as well… fcp can capture using the same setup, but maybe vtr exchange isnt up to it

you would appreciate this: my goal is to capture whole tapes with tc using vtr exchange, then sub clipping them in fcp. If i shut off all my kona stuff in fcp, i can log while digiitizing, just not on the same media. BUT since kona lh can only drive decks via rs 422, i need the L-PORT cuz the (**&&^$& M10U isnt rs 422.

  • Thanx

the application sees the timecode, as i can mark in and out in the vtr exchange window
When i go to do a capture, not capture now, the deck prerolls and then stops in pause and nothing else happens
thats why i was doing capture now.

I am using a Kona LH and controlling via rs422, through a TAO L-Port, to a Sony M10U.

the L-Port takes the rs422 and translates it to LANC which, other than firewire, is the only way to control the M10U

the tape is HDV, but i am downconverting to SD and capturing it Analog component into the Kona LH
