good question
just sort of as an aside, cuz it sounds like greg has decided on price alone, its always a question of time vs money…if you got the time to deal with a finicky set up, or your machine quitting in the middle of a job, then i guess you can save money
al least w apple computers, unless its some really fluky thing, they all prettty much work the same and are pretty user freindly when it comes to configuring
ther is NO WAY i would ever configure a PC for hi end video editing by my self nuh unh no how

ok
mac mall is reliable, but they may not be the cheapest.
for the best deal go to pricewatch.com and do a search for the machine you want. you will get a listing of links to various dealers etc, all ranked by price. it should be indicated whether or not the machine is refurbed.
be aware you are dealing with box shippers here, and you may have to do a bunch of configuring yourself, but it will be cheaphth

hey greg
we were just looking into a second machine, and the choice of quad vs intel, and believe it or not a new intel was cheaper than a rebuilt quad. I cannot say where the pricing was done as it was done by my boss, but rest assured this guy knows how to get a deal if its out there
i beleive the quad was 2600 and the intel was 2400

hey tom
yes but dont use “quicktime conversion”. you can do all the flavors available in conversion and make custom presets as well by using compressor. the dailoque to make and save presets is a little clunky, but you could create a “toms sorenson” and apply it to the clips
to really take advantage of the batch feature, you need to export a native movie of each of the clips you want to compress, open them in compressor, and apply your presets. there may be a way to do batches directly out of fcp, but i dont do it that way. bascially cuz i do not know how, and i have had good succes doing it of of native files
i believe a lot of this is covered in the manual, if not i think compresor has its own help files
hope this helps

hey bogie et al
followed your advice about exporting a clip to replace the original bad clip and using recconect media . it will take 45 minutes to export so i will do it over lunch. i am sure it will work that way. if not i’ll be back here to chew you out!! (just kidding) 🙂
thanx

hey jeremy
thanx a bunch!
yes. that is how you add or replace angles when the multiclip is in the viewer. and if i doubleclick on the multiclip in the sequence, it bring it back to the viewer. i cna then replace the angle that way as well.
however its only good until the next cut, then i have to replace the angle again,,,and again,.,.,.and again and so on
i was wondering, short of relinking to the better video, if there wa a way to replace it in ALL the editied multiclips?
thanx again

hey all
here are my observations about this HDV thang:
1. gosh this topic gets beaten senseless all the time. This is my experience just working with FCP. editing in hdv is really slow. the cpu has to process everything so even simpl dissolve have to be rendered etc etc
we find that working in either dvcpro50 or dvcprohd is a lot faster, and still gives us excellent picture quality2. we use a Kona LH in conjunction with our M10U. we either output 1080 or 525 analog component to our kona, and capture at either of the 2 dvc codecs aforementioned (we shoot HDV, but we usually edit and finish SD 16×9, as no one we supply can or wants to playback HD) we control the M10u with firewire.
3, I dont know how the 1200 treats anolog component in, if it does some conversion or not, but Sony’s flavor of HDV is only 1080i so you may have to knock down the frame size to 720p as well
4. we found that when cloning HDV from the camera to an m10u, we lost the timecode, so our clones had different timecode.
I do not know if that was the cameras fault, or the decks fault. I know the m25U supports TC in the hdv stream, but you might need 2 m25u machines to get TC accurate cloneshope this helps

Hey Jon
the web is a great resource for all the tech underwear like proper cabling and soundproofing
but you should ask your clients waht they want. talk to them about what they dont like about other places. do they want to sit next to you? behind you? how about desk space? wi fi? phone lines? lighting? does a big screen make sense, or are they intetested in proper color monitoring? or both? and dont forget amenities like coffee, food, restrooms, and parking
sure some clients probabaly wont know what they like until they see it, but maybe some can give you insight as to layout and flow
we have actully desiigned our room so clients sit next to me, and we have an accurate color monitor as well as a large screen.
this way we offer a nuts and bolts work environment as well as a “hollywood experience” to make final showings memeorable
hope this helps
