Hi
sounds like the “request for edl” is coming from a network? its probably for archive purposes? do they just want a printout?
ie in case someone has to go back one day and find a shot? just export the relevant video material ie the footage, and forget the titles/graphics/lower thirds etcif you have non tape media, such as animations, you may have to drop slug in to get it to export with the right reel names. I think FCP does some reel number/name substitution for non standard reel names ie joes_animated_open becomes 000001, with a listing at the top of the EDL
heres waht i do
make a copy of my final sequence. put all the primary video on V1, picture in picture shots or video overlays on V2. titles graphics etc on V3. also lay out my audio tracks so nat sound is on one and 2, music on 34 56, sfx on 78 or something like that. I believe the edl generation follows what tracks are enabled. if not just make copies of the sequence you made above, and delete tracks.
This may take a lot of work in the beginning, but next time you can lay out your sequence so its easier to do. (or have an intern do it!)
hope this helps

life is all good. been wrangling this fcp thing for almost a year (maybe more?) its a good job, but it aint edit!
my kids are both in high school, the job is doin fine, i got my health, i guess its everything i need,,,,, except that emmy!!!! (quote from susan lucci for a tv spot)I feel your format pain. if you look around, nine tenths of the posts on this forum (just this fcp forum) are all about formats. (so wasnt fcp6 supposed to fix that?)
as far as real time stuff, Apple Pro Res is supposed to give you a speed boost with all the real time stuff. you should alos be on an intel mac pro with a high end graphics card.
other than that, it a crap shoot
stay in touch, dood

MAAARCUS!
hey bud, wasssup! had a boy scout freind of my sons over at the big jamboree, and he said you brits were quite hospitable… go figure (haha)
on a more serious note.
which version of fcp are you on? i am surprised you are not getting RT on dv clips.
in fcp 5 if you have the playback set for safe, and not unlimited, you will get the blue “unrendered” make sure your sequence is set for “unlimited” and quality and frame rate are set to “dynamic” (of course you know its all under the RT button at the upper left of your timeline)
btw i have already forgotten what edit use to say, was it something like “unrendered media”?

When you connect to a sony monitor, and connect from the OUT of the sony monitor, whether it be component, composite, or YC, its only a “loop thru” in that the signal is passively tapped for the one monitor, and looped to the next. Other than the fact that an HD signal scrambles an SD monitor, it is prfectly fine to loop through (as others have said)
HOWEVER
I am opposed to looping signals for other reasons, primarily ground loops and loss of signal strength, which shows up as lower chroma or video level, or both
I found a 4×4 rgbs router on ebay for 50 bucks, and i use that. it makes all the diff in the world. there are always routing switchers on sale there, and a good amount are RGB or RGBS, which are fine for analog component.
hope this helps

you said
“if it’s such a good thing, why not stick with an Autodesk product?”
because edit wasnt really an autodesk product, at least not in the design sense
Its a long involved story but in a nutshell:
edit was d-Vision”OnLine” and needed money. Discreet bought them and kept the original R & D team together (which is what made it great) and gave them money. They changed the name to edit and made it better. (the only similarity between edit and the other dicreet products was the color of the interface)
THEN
Autodesk bought discreet, which is probably why discreet bought edit
THEN
Autodesk killed edit, and would not sell or release the code that made edit so great
So For Me
Autodesk sucks. I would never buy, rent, or use any autodesk product. ever.
and there are enough alternatives out there that you do not have to, including (grrr) fcpSoooooo
I had no choice in using this system (some people have FCP thrust upon them). I would rather have gone with avid, but it was purchased and done before we could do anything
BUT
if it were not for this forum, guys like Jeremy G and my tenacious desire to overcome the challenge of learning it, as it seems it is here to stay, I would have given up a long time ago.
so i use fcp. i have fed back my complaints to apple. i am vocal about what i think can be done to improve it. and so on
and BTW, if you cut the the dissolve out, you cant cut the clip, which is what i want to do anyway. AND “one more keystroke”? there are already too many “one more keystroke’s” for my personal taste. 🙂 (why cant the dissolve just stay or go away? why do i have to get an error message?)

Hi beth
I was a discreet editor for a long time…it is truly the greatest editor made. evrything about it makes sense.
about a year ago we bought an FCP system. It has taken me several months to “unlearn” my edit ways and learn the FCP way.
as someone coming from discreet to fcp the transition was hard…the only thing i think fcp has going for it is the cost. yeah maybe its easier, but I find there are many things about FCP that fly in the face of ediitng logic. (my biggest peeve being you cant cut, or ripple delete a shot with a dissolve.)
and why are there so many FCP training resources? it seems there are a lot more than for Avid?
i could go on, but let me leave you with this:
would you buy a product from a comapny that delayed releasing a 64 bit operating system so they could make a phone?
my 2 cents

thanx richard
i do not have the actions you mentioned in my version of Photoshop(CS aka V8) however I made one using the steps described in your PDF
I did have to add a “pre action” for deleteing the existing alpha channel, or else I get multiple alpha channels everytime i run the action. (my workflow is such that i may be making mutiple graphics in one PSD, then saving them as individual Pict files)
I have saved the doc you linked me, and will refer to it often!

doood! i see the obvious! my producer is a freakin dinosaur! 🙂
his biggest fear is that the “hard drive will get dropped” and he will lose all the stuff he shot
(like there was never a fear of a film can opening? or a light leak in the magazine?) or a vtr jamming? or a head clog?
adn sicne the fs100 is a “hard drive” he would be that much more averse to using it as a primary capture medium, instead of the P2 cards
I love p2,or fs100, and cannot wait for bigger cards!! the media is so easy to log and import, no freakin time code breaks, and i only need a 600 dollar card reader,(if that much) not a 14,000 dollar vtr.
honestly, thanx for your reply.
and just so all of you know, we actually have decided to stay with the camera we have, a sony Z1U, and spend the money on more storage.
thanx again to all who responded

the issue is i cant select the same profile for both. i made one when i had just one dell, and it looks good, but when i open my monitor pref and go to color, the setting only shows up on one of the monitor panes
ie made a profile called “DELL for Bob” on my reight hand monitor. added an identical monitor on the left. opened display preferences. right hand monitor has a choice for “DELL for Bob”, left hand monitor does not.
how can i get the DELL for bob to show up as a choice for my left hand monitor?
and BTW, i though flat screens were supposed to be much much more consistent than CRT’s?
