  • unlimited RT when, why not and what to do then?

    Hello all,
I havent got my head around why the unlimited RT option in the timeline is there sometimes, and not other times.

It seems to me that FCP is supposed to play multi formats on the same timeline, and even if it cannot playback at 25fps, it will do its best… this works sometimes and not others, getting the dreaded blue UNRENDERED screen instead.

Anyone care to venture an explanation of when, why no and what to do then…?

    thanks
    Mark.

RT is only available for certain formats, not all. When you’re working in an unsupported format, Unlimited RT will not be an option.

All RT performance is based on your drive speeds. Slower FW800 drives will not give you nearly as much RT as very fast SAS or Fibre Channel arrays.

    hi there walt
    yeah, ok thanks.
I guess i should NOT say yes to the “ok, change the timeline to suit this first clip” popup when adding a fist clip to a timeline… that way I will always have the RT, right?

I had been converting mpegs to dv files using that mpegdrop programme, and had chosen default pal dv anamorphic, so am suprised FCP would disable unlimited RT when dropping this clip to a new timeline.

    MAAARCUS!

hey bud, wasssup! had a boy scout freind of my sons over at the big jamboree, and he said you brits were quite hospitable… go figure (haha)

    on a more serious note.

which version of fcp are you on? i am surprised you are not getting RT on dv clips.

in fcp 5 if you have the playback set for safe, and not unlimited, you will get the blue “unrendered” make sure your sequence is set for “unlimited” and quality and frame rate are set to “dynamic” (of course you know its all under the RT button at the upper left of your timeline)

btw i have already forgotten what edit use to say, was it something like “unrendered media”?

    Hey bobarama!
how are you doing matey, LONG time no see.
im using fcp6, i bought that Suite2 box, pretty good stuff (except for compressor which is horrendous).
i think walter b nailed it though, some timeline formats support the rt thing, others dont, and if you say NO to the option to change to some other format, you should still have the RT, albeit not 25fps… i think.
    hows life with you bob?
    till later
    mark.

life is all good. been wrangling this fcp thing for almost a year (maybe more?) its a good job, but it aint edit!
my kids are both in high school, the job is doin fine, i got my health, i guess its everything i need,,,,, except that emmy!!!! (quote from susan lucci for a tv spot)

I feel your format pain. if you look around, nine tenths of the posts on this forum (just this fcp forum) are all about formats. (so wasnt fcp6 supposed to fix that?)

as far as real time stuff, Apple Pro Res is supposed to give you a speed boost with all the real time stuff. you should alos be on an intel mac pro with a high end graphics card.

other than that, it a crap shoot

    stay in touch, dood
