Check the Canon HV20 manual, I doubt you can capture using a HDMI Port this is usually OUT only. The Hv20 has a HDMI Port to connect to a Sony 1920x1080i TV for full High Definition and it looks sensational when done correctly.
The only thing I can suggest is that you capture normaly on desktop and transfer the file to the laptop for final editing ?
The ASUS laptop may not be up to the job unless it meets the Min Specs for High Definiton Editing ?Freelance Imaging & Video

I come from a motion picture background, and the 35mm sensor on the Canon 5D mark II and lens system provides better control of lighting, depth of field( ie., sharper close up control and blur of backgrounds) and certainly colour.( and is similar to the 35mm motion picture film which is still the benchmark. The lack of zoom motors in these cameras is a limitation, but, when you look at it , not much zooming is done in films anyhow. The Canon lens system is mind boggling, but, you need to choose the right lens and the Image Stabilised lens are the way to go , we use the IS 28-135mm for nearly all travel work and it is not heavy like the L 24-70mm Pro Lens we use on still work. Some lens they make apparently get rid of artifacts in video when you pann, horizontal stabilisation as well as vertical , so they tell me? Like the IS L 70-200mm but, it is heavy.

Read Page 94 M Manual Exposure, which can fix the speed, aperture, exposure index if you have set it correctly, then return to ON, to set you must depress the shutter button, see page 16. The settings should remain unless changed.
If not phone Canon Technical Service.Note : The new Firmware Version 2.0.4 Functional Enhancements 2.Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64) levels.
3. Adds shutter – prority AE mode TV( for shooting movies) and more.Be warned ” if you only use the mono microphone on the camera it will pick up the Image Stablizer working and you will need to use a Low Band filter when editing in Premiere Pro. You must push the Rode Video Mic for stereo or (similar mike) fully in to the body to remove body noise.

If it is a Canon EOS 5D mark II it will remember the 24p but, we work in 25 fps as we believe it gives a better “look” on pans and motion. As far as 1/50 sec goes you can set it manually but, if you have set the ISO rating at Auto it will change in low level light to get the exposure right, and it does.If it is a Canon HV20,30, 40 we can only set at 25P (Pal) which gives a near 24P look, but, it is not always ideal. the colour is fine but, there is some artifact movement in fast motion or panning ? Make sure the – above ON is selected and the wheel is engaged when you hold your trigger finger down .
Good luck

It would appear that is so, as my Premiere Pro 1.5.1 which worked with the Canon EOS 5 D mark II under the old Firmware will now not work, but, Premiere Elements 4 has H.264 and does. Time for a full upgrade in computer powere and new CS5 ?

I would check with Canon before you try that.I have had a minor problem with the 2.0.4 update, it did the change ok but, the 25fps shows as 2.5 fps in Premiere 1.5.1 but, not Premiere Elements. Frankly I cannot see any difference from 30fps and 29.97fps? And we had to convert that to 25fps (PAL) with no ill effects.
The 25fps from the camera is perfect for us now.Download all the old footage to your computer to edit.?

It looks awfull, but, we have used Panasonic 3CCD gear and it was very good. the sensor in the DSLR canon 5D mark II may be bigger, but, does it matter anymore ? there is no end>>>>>

Just guessing, but, even though the manual says set fast speeds for sport, I would not, if you set at 1/50 sec you will get normal motion blur but, it should be smooth. Even the HV20 would do better than the XH-A1 it seems , it may have more to do with the computer and Premiere Pro than the camera. I bet the look on the LCD is Ok?
