I was reading the info on the new Canon XF300 & XF305 and see that it uses a “CanonXF” Codec. What sort of issues am I going to run into trying to edit this on CS3? – CS4?

I didn’t know if it was a spin on an older Codec we could already handle or a brand new one. It stated that it is in a “MXF file wrapper” to integrate with “existing infrastructure”. If I’m not mistaken isn’t this the same file format that the Panasonic P2 files import as? Canon said in the press release that they have been working with NLE manufacturers so they could handle the new codec from day one, what ever that means. https://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=175&modelid=20322

Just seemed to good to be true that I could actually handle a new camera codec without buying more third party conversion programs.

Well , it had to happen after the Canon EOS 5D mark II ran at 38.6mps with a hugh 35mm sensor, but, there are advantages in using this type of videocamera.? Where will it all end ?New camera, new software, new computer ? better imagery and new monitors& TVs.

There are rumors that the cameras come with a software bundle that will make the files usable on current NLE’s but Canon has not confirmed exactly what is in the bundle.

    From the Canon site:
    Workflow

Smooth and efficient workflow is an essential part of the production process. Canon’s XF Codec is supported by the industry’s leading manufacturers: Adobe, Apple, Avid and Grass Valley. This ensures the widest compatibility with existing infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) software….

    MXF Wrapper
The XF300 uses Material Exchange Format (MXF) for its file structure – an internationally standardized container format for the exchange of video and audio material. Using the MXF format, video and audio can be wrapped into a single file along with important metadata. With MXF, the XF300 will not only benefit from the highest level of compatibility with NLE systems, but also with high-end network systems used by many networks and production studios.

    Bundled Canon XF Utility Software
Compatible for use on both Mac and Windows platforms, Canon’s XF Utility software provides a simplified first step in the process of managing and playing back your clips.

Additionally, the software can manage lists of clips in a number of display formats, as well as tag, add and edit metadata. It also serves as an efficient means of backing up media.

Well if Canon doesn’t even know I guess we are in wait and see mode. Here’s what I got back from Tech Support.

Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you with the XF300 and XF305.

Since the cameras have only been announced at this time we have limited
information and are unable to answer your question. We will not have
full details until the release time, but you can check back in a few
weeks and as we get more information we would be able to answer your
    question.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

    Thank you for choosing Canon.

    Sincerely,

    Christopher

Just received…. according to the reps at the Canon booth at NAB. They claim that, due to the MXF wrapper, the files are compatible with all current versions of Premier Pro.

It would appear that is so, as my Premiere Pro 1.5.1 which worked with the Canon EOS 5 D mark II under the old Firmware will now not work, but, Premiere Elements 4 has H.264 and does. Time for a full upgrade in computer powere and new CS5 ?
