sorry, the suites been pretty busy with clients and what not. its very strange, i believe it has something to do with the data rate. All of the footage is on greenscreen, acquired at 10bit M100HD. it has now been 3 days since i digitized the footage and playback performance is getting WORSE. the footage begins to “flip out” after playing back for about 15 seconds, regardless of where it starts. the horizontal positioning gets thrown out of whack and then it becomes a lot of digital noise. when i mute the video layer and play back only audio, it sounds fine. Oddly enough, i am not getting any real-time errors from media100. The only thing i am noticing from the xserve raid is that when video is being played back, only the left side digital “VU meter” activity LEDS light up. im pretty sure in the past both sides would light up and alternate. (currently set at RAID50).

when i create RAM previews in after effects, it plays looks and plays fine, when i render out another 10bit m100HD composition and bring back into M100HD, it goes bonkers. I cant remember the last time anything has changed in the RAID settings, but maybe it has. could it have anything to do with this being my first 11.0 uncompressed 10bit project? ive done other uncompressed 10bit HD projects in version 10 with the same system and it worked fine.

i even downloaded the AJA disk speed analyzer and i was getting speeds of 300 MB/s, about 299.3 MB/sec avg. is this normal?

im having trouble with the corner pin because the four points are so big that its very difficult to figure out where to place them. 1920×1080 composition, the shadow is only about 300x 600 tall.

go to users\(your home folder}\library\fonts folder and place them in there. then restart your applications that are open that you want to use that font in. that should do it.

September 7, 2006 at 8:41 pm in reply to: Explanation of M100 HD OFFLINE Resolutions?

[Floh] “No, as far as I know it is “conforming”/expanding it during playback. Like with 720/760 or 720/640 media, which can be mixed in realtime on a timeline the DVCProHD stream gets “decompressed” or unfolded to a full uncompressed HD stream and gets send to the Aja or HDx board as an uncompressed stream. So if you have enough CPU performance it does not matter what the resolution of the incoming signal is, it gets converted to the timeline resolution (1920*1080) in realtime on the CPU and gets send to the board as an uncompressed stream.”

i am meanning to perform this test whenever i get a chance… so if we have multiple HD codecs in the timeline, say DVCPROHD, MJPEG and uncompressed, what gets sent to after effects if you do a export to after effects function? this really applies to the DVCPROHD… obviously if you digitize through the HDX/AJA hardware m100 will conform the pixel aspet ratio. but if you were to use FCP digged material and quick imported to m100, then what? still rectangular, or conformed when “updating media file”? maybe i just shouldnt worry about it.

media 100’s ability to do all of this codec mixing seamlessly and crash-lessly in the first build and across two different hardware cards just blows me away. now if we can only have timeline nesting and locked window panes like RED4 and after effects i think i’ll be in heaven.

so whats the slider for if acquiring the DVCPRO HD codec? i saw no difference with the slider at 100% or at low %. the data rates did not change either. it did however, work with MJPEG, which is my codec of choice, anyways.

but doesnt DVCPRO HD have non-square pixels? when i get info from a quicktime window it says its sqaure, even when i import a ckip from final cut. im curious as to what happens when it “updates media file” is it conforming it really fast?

I also was looking for an alternative raid solution for our new hDe and talked to guys over at caldigit… their ads are are all over the cow. they seem to be pretty solid eSATA 3gb solution. they are very media100-like because they sell you the host adapter card, they use their drives and include their own software monitor very much like RAID admin for
xserve. also their boxes have hardware RAID so rebuilding a bad disk is significantly faster should one ever go down. and warranty! they are definitley worth a call, very knowledgeable , you can ask them anything. if you dont want to get too involved in engineering your own RAID, i suggest speaking to those guys first. they are very nice

yeah, ended up busting out the convergent design SD connect box to take care of that. funny though, its like im driving an 18-wheeler from my house to the playground which is 2 blocks away… but it works!

    JVC BR-HD50

quick note… is there something you can do to make the HD systems communicate with that JVC deck? the deck is equipped with RS422 and while it is a little slow, it batch digitizes beautifully on media100i 8.2.3, but for some reason it always fails to sync up in the HDX system. Video inputs are set to 480i component in, btw.

our HDe system is supposed to be arriving tomorrow, so i’ll be interested to see if i have any sucess there… finally HD analog component in!!!

  • i would be curious to see what configuration possibilities there are for the mac pro with those 4 hard drive bays. maybe have a system drive and raid the other 3 internals. wonder what kind of performance you can get out those SATA 3.0gb drives.

July 26, 2006 at 10:37 pm in reply to: goodbye final cut, hello m100… (again)

in response to michael, i am getting real-time dissolves and any fast-fx transitions, colorfx, and time fx with HD.

I did a few tests. we do not currently own any sdi hd decks that i could capture and test footage, so i used some a legacy 10bit HD project to test real-time effects. i gota dialog box to save a new project as because of backward compatibility issues.

Everything real-time played great except an occasional glitch on a dissolve. i think this was because the two clips were acutally part of the same master clip, so maybe m100 had trouble dissolving one media file onto itself.

It also worked flawlessly with DVCPROHD footage captured in final cut pro and zipped over to the HDX system. but the only thing i havent done is capture uncompressed HD footage with v11. i imagine media encoded with v11 software and v10 software have some difference, because v10 media from HDX will not work on AJA media 100 hardware.
